Tire Poll

I haven't been able to find one using the search engine... but what about a Poll to see what is the best tire, maybe three different polls, full road tyre/road and trail/full off road.

Make it easy for us newbies to instantly see what is generally used without trolling through thousands of 'Yet Another Tire Thread' :var_7:

I'd start one but as i'm new to the strom I have no idea what tires anyone's using...

Just a thought...

Well...here's yet another spin on the age old question!

Okay, I've "invested" a ton of time digging through all the related threads I could find but, like everyone else, my question has a little different twist...kind of like my mind!

I've recently acquired an 07 DL1K that is about ready for new skins and I'm torn. My riding will be 99%+ pavement, mostly commuting with as many 2 up weekenders thrown in as mother and the budget will allow. I desire the best wet traction tire that will last 10K miles without totally flat spotting right off the bat. I've researched Metz, Mich, Pirelli, Brdgstn, Conti...Since it rains often and in very patchy fashion here in Memphis and these folks absolutely can NOT drive in the rain I want the best defense I can get that won't wear out right away.

The ME880s sound like a good choice for tread life but I'm concerned about the bias getting good grip and to get into radials they have to be 10mm OS front and 20mm OS for rears which screws up the contact patch. The BT-021 rear sounds like a fine option but they don't seem to offer a properly sized front to match. Will a Battlewing front matched with a BT-021 rear behave properly. I've heard "NEVER mix tires" and then also just the opposite. I wish I could find a DOT chart listing treadlife, dry traction & wet traction, etc. like I found when researching tires for my wifes cage. Here's what I've been considering.

Any "CONSTRUCTIVE" input would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing wrong with mixing tires "I've done it", just don't mix bias ply with a radial. Good luck getting 10k out of a rear tire "safely", that isn't a realistic mileage number in my opinion. Especially down where you live, that pavement in TN can be like a cheese grater. I am hard pressed to believe there is a better tire "all around" out there, than the Bridgestone Battlewing. The original Metzeler Tourance is an excellent tire, but the front's are a piece of shite as far as I'm concerned. They don't even look like a match to the rear, and don't even get me started on the horrible wobble. Any and all tires have a compromise, that is just reality.

The best wear combo I've found is a Metzeler Tourance EXP (new one) front and a Metzeler tourance (old one) rear. The EXP front eliminated the wobble that happened around 35 mph, and the old Tourance rear wears like iron. They're not the stickiets tires out there but the run well and last. The 880's are crap. Really hard and slick.

I actually live just minutes across the border into Mississippi from Memphis but work in Memphis. Have you had a chance to compare the Battlewing to the BT021 on the rear? It seems that might be a great setup if they play well together.

Thanks for the insight! I've read sooooo much conflicting about Metz in general. It seems folks really love'em or hate'em! Like I mentioned, wet traction is really improtant to me so your insight on the ME880s is GREATLY appreciated! Was your experience with the bias or radial variant ME880?

Bias. They are great if all you want is long tread wear, and are not interested in cornering. If you're riding it like a motorcycle then they are dangerously slick, and really suck in the rain.

best combo ever

The best tire combo ever is the one I currently have. Anakee front, and old version tourance rear. My lord christ almighty what a difference from the stock trailwings. For real. That combo is hardcore like casey anthony.

I too have heard many that like that combo. A rear tourance, with a Maxxis Presa or Trailwing front works excellent as well.

ME880

For the riders who live in areas where the roads are highly abrasive...here in va many of the backroads are gravel chip and tar and as such eat grippier tires for breakfast. Barely got 5k miles out the stock rear tire before it looked like a peeled onion. Bring in ME880 and voila, tire life around 12k miles. Better handling than stock, more predictable over tar snakes and bridge gratings. Not a sport bike tire for sure, but a good long wearing commuting tire or traveling two-up tire. Presumably, with wife on the bike you arent going to be pushing the envelope that much. I know I don't. Anyway, it is a more expensive tire by half again than some, but with twice the life of many. I like em well enough I just mounted up a new one last week. I like having a tire that will last almost a whole season. YMMV

Hotshoetom

PS- the 160/70-17 bias ply profile works fine on the DL - the only disadvantage is a decel wobble between 30 and 40 mph...it is not even noticeable if you have at least one hand on the bars...I seldom ever notice it myself.

Mixing Tires...

Ok - My rear Tourance EXP (too damn soft!) needs replaced before The Big Trip in June. I had planned on putting a regular Tourance on the back (I already have a new front Tourance EXP), but I've been hearing good things about the Conti Trail Attack, plus it's a bit cheaper.
What do y'all think of mixing the front EXP with a Conti on the back???
