The dreaded fuel pump

heya all. hope everyone is well and still with us.

after taking a several year hiatus from this site and my Vee, it's in the shop suffering from a host of known Vee issues, worst of all the fuel pump. my mechanic claims that he can replace just the pump itself without all the extra hoo-ha built into it like float, filters etc. my recollection is that the pump is not replaceable by itself and one must fork over $700+ to suzuki for a new one, or track down one of the mitsubishi car pumps and do the bypass or some such crap.

it has been several years since i even thought about this stuff.

any thoughts?

To answer your questions, please let us know what is wrong with the fuel pump. Is it not working at all? Is it working but the fuel flow test results were minimal? Your posting jumps right into talking about replacing the entire unit, but doesn't give us any info on how it is acting so that you or your mechanic came to that decision. If it is low flow issue caused by the internal high pressure filter, the exterior in-line filter option is significantly less costly and rather easy to do. More details please.

The complete OEM fuel pump assembly is listed at $1048 but there are alternatives.

Go with one of the Amazon links or such. Your mechanic is correct.
The amazon pump is the way to go. Also do the bypass get it over with you will be glad.

Bought my fuel pump from All Balls the ball bearing company. Easy rebuild. Take a picture of the wiring before taking the original apart. Paid less than $200 for the pump. Good Luck
how i know the pump is bad you ask? well, it does nothing when powered up, mounted or off the bike.

i'll give the QFS pump a shot along with the bypass.
I just assembled the QSF Kit with a new fuel pump case/filter. The pre-filter was very hard to seat on the new pump. I have not completed the install (waiting on the tank sealer to cure). The kit requires terminating lugs for the +/- leads to the pump. It looks like it will all work out. Take car with the white clips, they look like they could break fairly easy.
While you have the fuel pump out of the tank, you may want to consider doing the fuel pressure regulator mod, if the clips fit slightly loose. The fuel pressure regulator has been know to clip loose. The pressure regulator popping loose will cause the bike to cut out, which is dangerous for the rider's safety.
The mod is basically making use of either binding wire / zip tie / hose clamp to keep the pressure regulator from coming loose from the fuel pump. Fuel Pressure Regulator Clip - Foolproof Fix?.

I'm mounting a new pump on my 1000/03. Can anyone tell me what this little starry metal ring is?

Could it be an unusual Part#15?
That seems to be the only option. Unusual looking for a washer though. Is the new pump OEM?

i"s not the #15.
Only one came, in a separate package. Seems to be something important by the looks of it.

The one on the left is the new one that came in the package, the right one is the old one that falls out of the tank, and the one in the middle is #15.

As it does not appear on the OEM parts diagram the part must be an upgrade of some sort.
Ask the supplier?

I would think the pump is made to fit many other bikes so it may not be required on a strom but used on other bikes.

The clip on the right looks like it would be used to hold the float on the level indicator.

thanks, Rolex. It was that indeed.
