Anyone know of a dealer in southern Indiana/northern Kentucky which will allow test rides of the Vstrom DL650. I am interested in them, but I will no longer buy a motorcyle without test riding one. The jap makers can go to perdition; if I can only test ride the european bikes, then they will get my business from now on. I currently own a Suzuki 2007 C50 but want a more all-around bike.
Thanks

I've not had a problem taking out used bikes from the dealers I frequent here in Colorado Springs. I have bought a bike from each of the two main dealers, and keep my eyes out for used bikes in the models that I am interested in.

A LOT has to do with the relationship you have with them and that they trust you. No bad intentions there, but a bike is a bit different than a car when it comes to a test drive and the ability and judgement of the test rider.

Find a 650 that is in the used line up at a dealer, show up on your own bike and get to know the sales person. Once they see you are upstanding and have a sincere desire to look at at 650, that should open the door to a test ride if it's going to happen at all.

I can understand if they won't let you take out a new bike, needs proper break-in, etc and most test rides involve getting on the throttle to see how she goes... Not the best for a break-in in most people's estimation.

I have bought new bikes from dealers in the Louisville Metropolitan areas and they will not allow test rides on any bike, new or used, unless it is a European bikes. They state their insurance does not cover the Jap bikes and the Jap manufacturers do not have test-ride programs. One dealer told me the European bike manu. covers their loss in case of an accident on a European bike.

I don't know if they do or not (might be worth a call to the original poster), but in Terre Haute, Thompsons has a used 2005 for sale. Being used, they might be more willing to let it out.

I've had the same problem, no test rides at the dealers I've talked to.
Of course the new BMW 650 that I looked at and test rode was very nice.
I will be buying the BMW if not allowed to test ride the strom.

A place to test ride

I was able to test ride both the DL650 and DL1000 back to back at the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show when it came through AZ. Every major manufacture was present except BMW.

The Suzuki folks were great. You had to go through a sign up system. Then they took everyone out on a good 15 minute ride where you had a chance to see what the bike could do. They use a leader and cleanup person so you have to stay in order between them.

Hmmm how to say this.... the ride leaders were people who understand the joys of motorcycles acceleration and the benefits of a course that went through a deserted office park complex with lots of twisties on a Sunday afternoon.

There are only a limited number of spots each day so get there very early if you want to ride specific bikes.

I don't know why they don't do a lot more of these test ride events. It was great to ride both bike. It answered so many questions I had. I loved both bikes for different reasons but I now feel confident to buy.

The DL650 is probably the better value of the two. I was real impressed with it after owning a KLR 650 and riding the DL1000 first. If you want a smaller bike then I believe you can buy the DL650 even without a test ride. It is a fantastic all around package.

I'm probably going to buy the DL1000 because I want sick unnecessary power for wide open western highways. Life is too short not to get the big one!

Thanks guys.
New2Bikes: I may give Thompson's powersports a call. I bought my current bike (C50) new from them. They are a 3 hr drive to their shop though.

There are no motorcycle shows in the Louisville Metropolitan area. I went to the Indianapolis motorcycle show last Feb, was disappointed in the show and nobody was giving test rides. I think the closest International show is in Chicago, and I refuse to drive anywhere near that city.

When I lived in KY none of the Jap dealers allowed testrides .. I just moved to the SF Bay area and went to check out the DL 650 2 weeks ago .. Same problem, I couldnt get a test ride at the dealer ( Eastbay Motorsports in Hayward, CA) ..

Any v-strom riders around the Berkeley, CA area (or east Bay area) willing to allow me to test ride a strom ? I have over 20 years of riding experience and only want to know if the storm is the bike for me ..

cheers ..

If your in Fresno let me know and I will take you to a dealer that will let you ride a Wee or Vee. They only want to know that you can ride.
