Never too soon to get ready for next summer.

Take a first aid class. Look for a wilderness class that doesn't ask you to call 911 as soon as you have the bleeding stopped and breathing restored. If you can't find the wilderness class, take the Red Cross Adult First Aid class or the best class you can find. Get all the info you can on how to handle the problems you might have to deal with when you're out of cell phone range.

Buy or make a first aid kit. It doesn't have to be big, but even a small kit can be a lifesaver...you might need to instruct someone how to use your kit to keep you going until you're out of the woods, so to speak.

I gashed my leg. In the kitchen. Simply fumbled a sharp knife that fell and slashed a leg vein. Bloody mess everywhere. The old first aid training kicked in, I put a clean compress on it to stop the gushing (laundry-clean dish cloth), held it tight until I hobbled into the bathroom for some tape. Taped it tight and got a ride to the E.R. for stitches. No real problem, just an inconvenience until it heals. That first aid training paid off.

Great reminder! I keep one in my truck, and need to add one to my Wee now that I'm riding. Most pre-made first aid kits are worthless. I like making my own. Go heavy on 4x4's, roller gauze, triangular bandages, and throw in a tourniquet a SAM Splint and trauma shears. Don't forget gloves and a CPR mask...I always assume I'll be using it on someone else.

Pulled out the SAM splint Saturday afternoon for my brother's foot. He tagged a hidden branch while out dirt biking. We thought it was sprained but turned out broken. The doctor was impressed with our first aid application.

Get educated and build your kit.

Nice skills with the SAM! They can be used for almost anything, including C-collars. @ CruisnGrrl...Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add that to my kit It's getting heavier by the minute!
