The 1st week of April I was T-Bone by an out of control car on the highway. Apparently the driver was cut off and moved onto the shoulder. When he re-entered the road he lost control, cut across 4 lanes of traffice and hit me at a 90 degree angle. It looks like the bulk of the impact was the front of the bike just in front of my leg. I have no memory of the accident. I lost about 24 hours of memory.

I ended up with 6 broken ribs in my upper back, a punctured and collapsed lung, broken sternum, broken collarbone, broken finger and bleeding on the brain. I also sprained both wrists. I spent 5 days in ICU on a ventilator and another 5 days in a step down unit. Currently I'm doing pretty well. I'm still super week and tire quickly. Sneezing is still aweful...hurts like hell...like getting hit with a shovel in the back and center of my chest at the same time.

I returned to work this past Monday after 9 weeks off. I'm easing my way back into work. I'm recovering quickly. Luckily I was in good shape fitness wise. I think that's contributing to my recover. I lost about 20 pounds of muscle which I'm gonna start working on next week.

I've been a believer in ATGATT...now I REALLY am. Despite hitting the ground at highway speed my Aerostich suit left me no scratches...no road rash.

Dang, glad you're still around to tell the story. Hope you heal up quickly.

This year I've started wearing a Helite airbag vest on the street. I had a medium speed lowside on the track in April while wearing one, and it worked well. It's pricy and an extra step, but I'd definitely recommend it.

Wow man glad you made it! I had to Google ATGATT, I always wear my gear. Except this week I rolled my zx9-r out of the garage and was riding it up the road in front of my house with no helmet, and shorts. It's a dead end Rd with very little traffic, I was going way too fast and almost hit my neighbors pit bull dog.. Scared me, I'm not leaving my house again unless I'm in full gear!

Wow, hard to consider yourself lucky after you were put through all that. But you are here to tell the story thankfully. Here's to a quick recovery and a safer future.

One more thing I almost forgot. I was on my way to my friend’s house when I got hit. Before I left I connected him to my Google location sharing. When I was over due he messaged me asking why I was at the hospital. Shortly after that he came to the hospital. I was unable to use my phone for about 5 days after. He would never have known what happened for a long time.

Thanks for all the support. I really need to hang out on StromTrooper more often. I spend too much time on TacomaWorld.com

Happy ending to a bad story. You are lucky for sure, and smart to wear ATGATT. I have been debating getting one of those inflatable vests for extra protection, Hit-Air,Helite and others. In your case, it would have helped a lot. :smile2:

Ouch... glad you're still with us... !

These are the incidents that scare me more than anything else... where the rider bears absolutely no fault... I do hope you got yourself a good lawyer. It doesn't ease the pain, but certainly makes recovery a little happier in the long run...

Been there...

Now that is some rotten luck, if you had just slowed down a tiny bit that day, or sped up, or missed one light, you would have missed the whole thing and likely never known how close you came either, but you made it through and sounds like your well on your way to full recovery.

Getting the same bike again?

Condolences on the injuries. Glad you feel like your recovery is going well.

I recently upgraded my ATTGAT by purchasing a Helite airbag jacket. The jacket was on special at a BMW rally and a bit cheaper than the vest unit.
The way the bag inflates and the size of the back protection you may have not gotten the rib injuries.
They are pricey but hopefully will do a good job of protection when a bad incident happens.
As a side note, the jacket is purported to be waterproof like an Aerostich and it worked fine riding in some good down pours last weekend. My aging Roadcrafter pants still worked too. With the vents in the jacket I was mostly comfortable in the heat of the Arizona/Nevada/Calif deserts too. I had wet vests with me but didn't need them. My Gerbing under the Helite worked for the cool Rocky Mtn mornings.

That was a shameless plug for Helite. God bless ATTGAT.

Holy smokes, those are pricey aren't they. It's kind of like insurance, you hope you never use it, but its there if you need it.

Might be worth considering.
