I just bought a k3 dl1000 from Ebay w/1400ish miles on it- drove it from Omaha to Cody, WY in 99 degree heat- no problems. The rear brake fluid resevoir requires fluid. Question- I picked up some synthetic DOT 4 which states that is compatible with all brake fluids. Is it safe for me to just top it off with the synthetic or does it really matter what's already in the system? Sorry if this is a dumb question- I just bought the bike :D

Your Strom should have DOT 4 in it, that's what it calls for.

For short term you can top it off, but if you are home it takes all of 5 minutes to get all the old DOT 4 out and the fresh DOT 4 in the system.

Loosen the side cover on the bike, and you should be able to flex it out enough to get the screws on the reservoir off (hardest and most time consuming part, and you have to do that anyway to add the fluid, so just replace the fluid as follows).

Take a syringe and suck out most of the old fluid from the reservoir and add some new fluid to bring the fluid level back up. At the rear caliper, loosen the bleeder screw 1/4 turn (attach a hose to the bleeder and run it into a soda can or something to catch the old fluid) and operate the brake pedal with your hand to start pushing the old stuff out. Keep a close eye on the reservoir and add to it as needed so it doesn't get too low, and when new fluid starts coming out the bleeder, shut the bleeder, top off the reservoir and put the cover on, etc, and you are done.

May as well do the clutch and two front brake lines as well, very quick and painless.
