Okay, I give up. The SW Motech instructions for installing the crash/engine guards are a picture. I can pretty much work from a picture, but I need some detail.

Am I supposed to support the engine on a jack or blocks? At least one of the bolts I have to replace looks like it's a load-bearing member, and there are four bolts that look like they at least partially hold the engine up.

I've got to run out for some hex wrench heads that will fit in a torque wrench. You guys discuss and get back to me. Thanks much!

I put my Motech engine bars on which automatically means that you can too. None of the bolts (even the long one) hold anything up, so no jack, etc, is necessary. It's a well-made piece that went on pretty easily according to the picture. Once you hold the bars up to the bike, it will be clear which bolts are used. I did put some Loctite on the new bolts when fastening them.

One thing to check is that the bars only touch the spacers over the large bolt and clear the frame members. Put enough washers under each spacer to get it to clear if it doesn't with the spacer alone.

motech skid plate

I got the engine bars on, no problem. I got the skid plate about halfway on and finally figured out they want the left side of it held on by the side stand bolts. I stopped right there for fear of dumping the bike on myself. If those two bolts hold on the side stand, then do I need a center stand or a jack or upright support to install the skid plate? It'd be great if SW Motech included instructions instead of just a single picture! :bom_smartass2:

I'm ordering a center stand tomorrow!

I remember the crash bars went on without a hitch. The centerstand will confuse you for a minute. Seems like I had to repurpose some allen wrenches to get it on right. Also, the springs were tricky. Did this 4 years ago, so I dont remember the details, but im sure they are posted somewhere on the site.

Yeah, I eventually got a local shop to crack the seals on the sidestand bolts for me. The rest of the install was pretty much a snap. I didn't have the hex bolt extensions they did to go straight through the undercarriage of the bike. It's amazing what a few of the right tools can do for a project.
