I'm looking for some information on what happens when you make various suspension setting changes. I wanted to add some preload to the rear and now I have the issue where the steering pulls when I make slow speed turns. I can feel a slight tug in the handlebars as I lean the bike over.

What I'm looking for is a list of "if you do x, then y will happen". And also, if you crank the rear preload all the way without adjusting anything on the front, you can expect what?

I've read a few things so far but those articles were all too concerned with rebound damping and other esoterica. I just want the basics.

Oh yeah. Why did I want add rear preload? I'm a heavy guy, ~255lbs. I felt that the bike was squatting at the back under acceleration. Is adding preload the right thing to do? Did I add too much? I'm at 4 now.

Your going to end up installing a new front spring and rear preload spacer to get proper Sag for your weight, no way around it.

To make you really happy you'll add both Gold Valve Kits and spring to the front and a new rear spring.

To be really really happy you'll also replace the rear shock with one of the aftermarket units.
