Hi All,

I am going for a ride somewhere on Sunday August the 19th. I'd like to leave early (7ish) and make a day of it.

I thought I would setup a separate thread about this ride. I don't have a final route setup but am thinking it might be nice to head west to do something different. I am open to change.

Here's one suggestion I received but since I don't know the roads I will have to work on a route. If you know the roads and want to figure out the routing please feel free.

"going up through Collingwood or the Beaver Valley, Owen Sound, Sauble Beach, then down the Lake Huron shore to Grand Bend. Three nice roads running across the Escarpment between Airport Road and Hwy 124 would include #17 running west out of Mansfield, River Road running west over to Horning's Mills, and #21 through Honeywood on the north side of the Pine River Valley. There's also the Pretty River Valley Road south of Collingwood and #40 running west through Walter's Falls towards Port Elgin. "

Worst case I would happily head out towards the east on a nice loop though all those fabulous roads out there.

It would be about 4 hours of highway just to get down there. Its pretty much out of the question if we're only planning a day ride.

Having made the above suggestion, I'll now make one small revision. Running all the way down to Grand Bend would be too ambitious for a day ride. Probably Port Elgin or Kincardine would be more feasible as a southern terminus before turning east for home.

The biggest difference in going west is that you don't have the more remote twisties like 507, Elephant Lake Road, etc. and you are hitting small towns much more frequently. The ride is more about seeing places and certain views than about "sport" riding those more remote twisty roads in my opinion. Still, it can be nice for a change if you are getting too familiar with the east. The ride from Sauble Beach down to Port Elgin is fairly slow with lots of traffic on weekends in the towns but the Mirmachi Bay road is beautiful on a sunny day.

If going up to Owen Sound, rather than go directly across to Sauble Beach, you could go up the Peninsula on #1 through Wiarton and back down. There are some spots along there where there is a decent view of the Bay.

I'd be happy to set out a route to the west, then you could check the distance on the GPS to see how long it would take. We could just add or subtract loops from there. Otherwise, the route we did last Sunday is hard to beat for "sport" riding.

I might be up for the 'scenic' version, depending on family commitments. Of course, I'm in Waterloo, so kinda part way there already :)

C'mon down!

My fellow Canadians are always welcome to visit here in the Southern Tier. Olean is 1.5 hrs. south of Buffalo on state designated scenic highway 16. Very close to the Finger Lakes and Allegheny Park and Forest in western PA. The Chautauqua Institute is an hour and a half east of here. You can PM or Email me for details if you're ever in the mood for a little visit to the US.

Throttlehound:

I think I'd like to see that countryside.. nice for a change!

Personally, I am going to see the eastern country a lot in the next few weeks. I love it but a change is nice!

You and Heavy have a good grasp on the area.. I don't, so feel free to setup a route.

Thanks for the offer!

I'd love to head down there but it's been pointed out that for many of us it will be a 2 hour ride on super-highways just to get to the border, and another hour or two after that to get to any nice roads.

I would love to head down there in the future but I think it will have to be an overnighter.

Overniter

Know exactly what you mean. Its a long hump down the 400 whatever and the QEW to the border. Back when I was a pup I used to commute from Welland to Scarborough to attend trade school at Centennial College. It was a hellacious trip in the car (Lada) but always a blast on the bike (Seca 650). When I took the bike I was always early for class. There are some comfortable places to stay in Olean if you ever decide to make an overnight trip and my guest room is always available. If you're feeling a bit stressed and sore from the trip my wife, a Chiropractor, does take walk ins at her office two blocks from the house.

Cheers

I'd like to go on that ride but can't make it, I've already planned on visiting some friends up in Sudbury that weekend.

I need to talk all my friends into buying motorcycles.

I like that route but my one little suggestion would be take Beaver Valley and turn off and head westward down the backroads just before Thornbury, Hwy 26 on a weekend can be a real crawl. Collingwood to Owen Sound on Hwy 26 would be sheer torture for someone who suffers from road rage and cant-remain-behind-someones-bumper-itis (I have no idea who that would be).

Have a fun ride, post some pics.

I've already suggested we bypass that little part of heaven on 26.

Too bad you can't join us.

Hey guys,

I have been too busy lately to plan some alternate routes for this ride in detail. It will probably be this weekend before I can come up with some suggestions. We should probably develop the route off-line anyway using email or PM. What do you think?

Heavy and V-Tom:

I have just sent you a detailed proposed route covering many of the best roads that I know of in western and southwestern Ontario. I PM'd Heavy and emailed V-Tom. Hope you like it.
