Hi all. I'm a relatively new rider. My father in law has been gracious enough to let me use his spare bike ('01 Shadow ACE) for my first season of riding and as it comes to a close my wife gave me the go ahead to buy my own within the confines of a strict budget. We bought a fixer upper house last year and are just about done with all renovations so new is out of the question and the used budget is in the $2k area. Given my size (I'm 6'7" 325 lbs) I have zero problems flatfooting a DL1000 - plus it's much more comfortable for me than the 650. I have not ridden the first gen ones, but did ride a 2019 one at a Suzuki demo day and I'm good with the power and high COG. No issues with low speed maneuvering or grabbing too much throttle. Most of my riding has been on the highway to and from my Brazilian jiu jitsu academy with a few longer rides into upstate NY to hit some twisties. There are painfully few places to go off road in NJ so it's not even really a consideration.

With that out of the way - I have some choices to make within my limited budget. First is a 2003 with 29k miles on the clock. Never dropped, it has panniers and a top case, heated grips, power commander and clutch basket are done, and supposedly the chain, sprocket, brakes and tires have about 3k miles. The catch is it has been stored in a garage for the last 2 years. Supposedly the tank was left full and stored with StaBil, but I'm concerned about what it would take to resuscitate this bike.

The other is a K7 with 45k on the clock. Has the power commander but the clutch basket was not done. This bike has been dropped and has a big scratch on the tank.

Which one would you guys go with? Is it worth taking a chance on the bike that has been sitting or go with the newer and still running bike that has cosmetic damage?

Hola, congrats on the go ahead from the wifey. Oh and congrats on rehabbing the house so quickly.
I'd go for the first one. Then you can put your own scratches on it!

If you are concerned about rust in the tank. You can see through gas just use a flashlight and look in the tank.
The only area I would be concerned with is the Age of the tires. With only 3k miles on the tires should have a lot of tread but they still could be hard from age. You can ride on them just don’t push them or ride In the rain or on wet roads.

My vote is for the nicer looking of the two bikes.

Take the newer one. There are more parts available. Plus being beat up it should be lower in price. It is almost zero risk if you don't overpay for it. You will eventually also drop it, no big problem, and if you don't like the bike just sell it again for a minimal loss, if any.

You can ride it with the clutch as is, just not as sweet as after the clutch basket upgrade. You can do that once you are otherwise happy with the bike and saved some up.

More important is to make sure it is in good working condition, no rust in the tank, no leaking fluids anywhere etc. Ask the Seller when routine maintenance was done (all fluid changes, valve checks etc.) and get some evidence of what was done and by whom. Why is he selling it? Common sense needs to be applied to make sure the story gels.

I think 1500 - 1800 for the K7, depending on what useful accessories come with it.

Don't be in a rush. Come winter the price drops since people want to get the old bike out of their garages. These are not the only 2 DL1000 out there ;-)

Right on, you'll love riding that DL1000. Read up on the known issues so you're informed beforehand.

I like the stored bike if it was stored *full* and with a solid dose of stabil. Also ask what gas (octane and ethanol content) was used to store.

I've had gas in my generators last for years with Stabil and MMO, 91 octane no ethanol, with load tests every 3-6 months.

Best way to know for sure is check for rust in the tank as mentioned, and try to start her up. Put premium in that bike the first chance you get to up the octane and add some cleaning agents like techron. Octane decreases over time.

I'd go for the k7 ...newer and I'd rather have machine that has been ridden and maintained.

Good bike for your size :surprise: but even then you may need to change bars and foot pegs.

Can I assume you are legal to ride??

The inspection should be informative and I'd make a deal that the bike needs the inspection before sale and on those ages walk away if the seller will not.

In addition as a new rider and seems a likely two up rider ....I would seriously consider getting your budget up and get something with ABS.
You and the bike are a lot of mass to haul down and while most riders here grew up without ABS and have the skill set to deal without having it....very few regret having it now.

It is likely your highest risk as a new rider... losing control of the motorcycle under heavy braking, wet or uncertain road conditions.

Armed with the knowledge in these links, you should have a few things to ponder and to look out for. Compile a list of things that you may want to question the seller on. Good luck with your search for a new ride.
