What a pissy night. I was planning on doing a quick chain adjustment and lube tonight and it turned into an ordeal.

I got the chain where I wanted it and tightened the axle nut with a 1/2" socket wrench to just snug. I got out my torque wrench, set it at 72 ft./lbs., then started to torque the nut down. I was pushing on the tire a bit with my knee because the right side wanted to slip back a little as the nut was tightened. The nut was getting close to tight enough but the torque wrench never clicked. I torqued the nut another 1/2 turn or so then decided that something didn't feel right. I then tried to loosen the nut to check things out and it took a lot of effort to finally get the nut off.

I took the axle out and the outer 1/2 of the threads are rounded off. There is also some sort of imperfection about halfway down the threads that almost looks like a tiny weld bead. I'm guessing that the nut hit this stuff and couln't grab any more threads. In the process, the threads in the nut got tweaked and that's what rounded everything else off when I loosened it.

The bottom line is that I think the axle was bad and I just hadn't hit the bad spot until this chain adjustment. I've never had the axle nut completely off so there's no chance of cross threading. I'll call the dealer tomorrow and see if they'll replace the axle under warranty.

Has anyone else ever run into this sort of thing?

I took the axle in today and the guys at the shop thought it may have been cross threaded at the factory. They said that the DL's ship with the rear wheel assembled.

They will try to get Suzuki to cover it under warranty but couldn't gaurantee anything. The worst part is that the new axle won't be in until Monday so I guess I'll be doing lots of yard work this weekend. :?

It does suck. The weather is absolutely gorgeous right now.

Fortunately, this happened after I had returned from a fantasic 1400 mile ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains. It would have really blown to miss that trip while waiting for an axle.

I hope the dealer does the right thing and backs this up for you.

Yes it does suck to have your ride down for maintenance. Count your blessings however. Good thing the axle nut just didn't lose its grip while you were rolled over into a hard corner at about 50, eh?

Good luck getting back on the road.

Things are looking up. Zook was kind enough to cover the new axle under warranty and I spent some quality time cleaning my swingarm and chain last night. I should be rolling again tomorrow. 8)

Axle

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine. His dealer covered it under warranty as well. Sounds like a common factory defect for sure.

I was wondering about that. I have a pretty cheap torque wrench and I considered the possibility that I over-torqued the nut. After looking at the thread pitch, though, I think you could probably torque that sucker until the swingarm started to collapse.

Might be a good thing for everyone to check on the next chain adjustment.

Me too!

The exact same thing happened to me. I had been messing with my chain alot cause from day one I have not been able to keep that chain tight. But anyway so I am retightening the axle bolt and I notice that it stops moving freely and the torque wrench hasn't clicked. then I try to back the nut back off and i get it about half way then is seises on me. so I take it to the dealer and they were able to replace the striped axle and nut for me. but now with the new one its starting to do it again and so I'm affraid to touch that thing now. Oh and my chain is still loose.

hope it doesn't fall off!

Are you sure your torque wrench is calibrated properly? I can see this happening once, but twice??

Rear Axle and nut.

I have the same problem - I adjusted the chain and when I tried to tighten it I felt something grabbing it but it did tighten. The next time same thing put a drop of 3in one oil and it felt fine. Then I was going to put on a new tire and when I tried to take the nut off for the first time it bound up and I had to twisted the threads off. The nut just fell off. Now the bad news the axle is on back order I love the bike but getting parts S%#&s. :( Got some small locksmith files and worked over the rear axle and was able to get a new nut on it and torqued to 72ft lb and it is holding for now. :? Have a trip to Yellowstone and Sturgis planned but don't know if the new axle will be here in time. Kind of worries me.

There was a batch of axles and nuts that were improperly heat treated. It's unusual but possible that a replacement would come from the same batch. Suzuki has replaced them under warranty before so it's probably a matter of getting somebody who is aware of the problem to get a warranty replacement.

And its not just the DLs that it happens to. I had this happen on my GS1200. The axle was replaced under warranty.

I have been noticing lately that I keep having to tighten my chain. I hope it doesn't have the same problem. Is this happening with the 2005 650's?

Unless the nut and/or axle is stripped so as to not hold position, that's a sign of chain failure.
