I don't know how many of you use Streets and Trips for route planning, but I've found it to be a great tool, but it's missing 1 very important feature, GPX support.

I found a blog for the S&T development team and asked about it. I got a some what promising response.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your mail and interest in S&T. I too would love to see GPX support but unfortunately the feature had to be axed from the schedule. I'll add your mail to the list of requests and fight for it on the next round.

Subject: GPX Support Patch

I'm a long time S&T user I've had 2004, 2006 and now 2008. I upgraded to 08 because 06 was having issues in vista while scrolling the map. My main purpose for S&T is planning motorcycle trips and routes. It is by far the best mapping software I've ever used. My only complaint is that there is no GPX support. In a day and age where a good percent of people have some sort of GPS devise why isn't the somewhat standard gps exchange format supported?

I use to have a work around by using GPSBable, but it no long works with the changes made to the 08 file structure. Are there any plans to support gpx files in current version or in future versions?

Thanks
I urge all of you to send messages to the team. Maybe we can get some GPS support in the next version.

Thanks

I'm sure Robert and his team will update GPSBabel soon in order to make it 2008 compatible. A $10 or $20 donation will probably bump it up the priority list. They're very good at responding to feature requests.

I'm a confirmed S&T fan ever since DeLorme changed the user interface on StreetAtlas USA back in 2004. I would love being able to use S&T to route, then download to my Zumo (I really do NOT like Garmin's MapSource software!).

Regarding lobbying the team - how did you send your message to them? When I tried, I got into a whole sign-up for Windows Live that I'm not particularly interested in joining. Any direct e-mail address?

I don't have a direct contact for them I'll see if I can get one. If you have a hotmail address there's not really any sign up involved.

I got S&T on a whim, since I didn't have any Garmin software for my GPS StreetPilot. When I found out it couldn't do GPX, I felt like it was a wasted effort. I tried GPS Babel to convert some files, but it didn't work for me. In my mind, Mircosoft has done the traditional thing they always do - try and make their stuff the standard, instead of following a standard.

In general, I like the software - but it is crippled in my opinion.

use both pc and pocket pc versions

For $20 or less, this software has always been a favorite of mine for trip planning. Currently using 2006 as this is the last update with a version of pocket streets included. Pocket pc is a dell axim x51v using ram mount and otterbox 3600. Works fairly well, but wince is limited to size of maps, so several small maps must be made and converted. Streets has always been easy to use. If I ever get a standalone gps, the gpx support would be helpful.
