Ok.. Actually under the bandsaw..
I'm figuring on cutting at the spot on the screen where the slight upward radius starts. This starts low on the sides and is about 2/3rds the way up in the middle..

Photos to follow..

Also, since it's a black bike, I think I'll do the same as many here and paint the inside of the screen black, too..

cut down

mornin paper, i had to cut down my sheild on my wide glide a coupla years ago.i used a jig saw with 32 teeth per inch blade.first, i taped of the area with masking tape, on both sides. then marked it, and cut slowly, with shaking hands! after, i sanded with 320 grit paper to take out any roughness, ended up looking stock. my 2 cents, becman

Well,
I ended up just marking where I wanted the cut and putting packing foam under it and taking it to the bandsaw.. Worked great!!
I then took it to the big belt sander at work and got it even across the entire cut surface, and radiused the corners (the sides where it goes back into the stock surface)
I've started filing the edge to radius the area I cut, and will polish that during lunch.. If all goes as planned, I'll be painting the interior black tonight..

I've decided to keep the Givi for LD riding, and if the shorty works as well as I think, I'll use it for everyday stuff..

I'm signed up for a track day in July, and I just can't see myself out there with the squids, using that damn tall shield..

I'll go pop a couple pictures of it in process..

Please do snap some pics, Paper!

I know lots of folks were curious as to the measurements and results on a 04+ model (mine was an 02) before they started whacking their shield!

As a further update - after over 1500 miles on the cut down screen - I am THRILLED with my homemade "shorty". Best thing I ever did to the bike.

I also kept my Givi tall for touring and LD riding. :D

Okeydokey..
After it's all said and done, it's better, but still not what I was hoping..
Also, in hindsight, I wish I'd have figured out my cutting with the shield on the bike.. I would have gone a flatter route, rather than the big radius...
Anyway...

Here's the screen after cutting:

And here's some after photos, after trimming/painting the interior/mounting..
Please excuse the dead bugs.. I'd rather ride than wash...

Surprising how little difference it makes, isn't it? I cut mine down 3-1/2" and it has not changed things as much as I expected. I've started playing with shims to lay the screen down more and it seems to be helping.
