Is the 2017+ steering stem bearing lock nut still the same as previous generations, using the 6-tooth DHS-4131-1 socket tool sold at Ebay? The bike model list only shows the VStrom through model year 2014 for this tool.

I want to use the proper tool design, hammer and punch need not apply. Nor Channel Lock (water pump) pliers.

If it is the same nut as previous generations, are there similar tools available other than what is sold on Ebay? If so, what, where?

Summary answer to my original question- no, the 2017+ DL650 configuration is not the same as prior generations.

I got ahold of the seller, Dan at DHS Racing, asking about his steering bearing lock nut tool for the 2017+ VStroms. Here is his reply, including recognizing he (mistakenly) does not represent the newest generation VStrom on his product page- whoops. He'll update that product info. The Ebay listing he runs, it does show the DHS-4131-1 tool, but the latest generation DL650 & 1000 are not on that Ebay list, and I informed him of that change as well. I have ordered the DHS-4131-1 lock nut tool.

"DHS-4131-1, the 'Dash 1' is required for your DL due to the extra depth needed. I just discovered that I need to update my web-site. Shipping is included. Thanks for your order Dan."

That's good, should help future steering bearing-replacers. I recently finished upgrading to tapered roller bearings on my 2007 Vee.

The DHS socket was absolutely essential to the job. Without it, I'd have been stuck damaging my lock nuts (and possibly other things) with a drift punch and hammer, while completely guessing at the tightening torques. I don't have the setup to make my own spindle nut tool, so that wasn't an option.

I need to do the bearing job. I guess it's time for some all balls tapered dudes and the socket.
Like the 02 sensor special socket I bought a few years ago. Used once but it actually paid for itself compared to having a shop do the job.

Additional payoff with the DHS socket comes after the actual bearing replacement. I've found it necessary to try a few different combinations of upper & lower stem nut torque, to get things just right. It's much easier with the correct tool.

It is unlikely I am the first person to discover the bearing separator/puller/installer kit, but it sure did the trick.

Even with the special tools, I spent under $200 on the whole project. Wasn't "easy" but was a whole lot better than paying a shop at least twice as much, plus the associated hassles.
