Stay Safe

After a morning of work around the house, my wife and I decided to take the bikes out for a ride to dinner. As we live in El Paso TX, all the desirable destinations are west into New Mexico. We have a 65 mile route we like out on NM Hwy 28 thru the pecan groves to Mesilla NM, the NM Hwy 185 up to Hatch NM to grab a green chili cheese burger @ Sparky's, (if you have not been, you should go, great burgers and great location).
On NM Hwy 185, past Radium Springs NM, we came upon an accident scene, there were already 8 or so emergency vehicles on scene and the wreckage of motorcycle and body covered by a sheet. The accident was on a turn in the road, with the Rio Grande on one side and a 40+ ft rock wall where the road had been carved out.
I have no idea what happened, but I did not see a non-law enforcement vehicle on site.
My wife was shaken, after we passed the scene, we pulled over and took the time to compose ourselves. We prayed for the families that would be impacted by this loss.

Stay safe friends.

Stopped at a gas station for a Gatorade last weekend.

Two supermotos went by and one pulled a wheelie. Young kids, probably 20's.

I hopped on and followed. Watched a show for about 15 miles. Waiting for a loop out or a crash.

Didn't happen. :)

I haven't seen something like that since I was 13yo and saw my friend laying dead in a ditch after having a seizure while riding a motorcycle down the road to cool off. His dad was the one to find him after being gone for about 20min, I can still hear his mom scream from 1/4 mile away. I hear reports of motorcyclist failing to negotiate curves (faster than they ought to be going or target fixation) around where I live (Ozarks), they go off the road and down embankments or into rock walls. Seems most are on larger, heavier bikes and more often than not a Harley. Not trying to single them out, just an observation. Fortunately for me I don't have any emotional attachment or much empathy to people I don't know so stuff like that doesn't bother me. I guess that's why I do crime scene/trauma cleaning.
RIP biker brother. He died doing what he loved.

Is it raining down your way? You didn't mention if the roads were wet or not. Sure is raining here in Albuquerque.

I spent a couple years in Las Cruces. Never got to Sparky's, but I have stuffed it at Chope's.

No, sunny and dry roads, we could see the rain in the distance, but none on our route. We passed by Chope's on the way up and back, it was packed both times. We have been in El Paso 3.5 years and never made it there, we normally hit up Andele's Dog House for a short ride, or out to Hatch if we have time.
Is the Kings X still there? Lucy's was a favorite.

Chope's was unique when we went there decades ago. For libations, we received a 40 and 2 mugs from a 'bar' on the property somewhere. Never understood the business model. :D
Chope's has changed little if any since decades ago, though my last beer there was in 2003 or 4 I think. Still a great place to stop for a cold one.

If ever you make the ride to Hatch to find Sparky's closed, which can and will happen, keep going up I-25 to San Antonio and try the green chile burger at the Owl Bar and Cafe. As good as Sparky's on the right day.

Having only been in El Chuco for a short time, Btadlock, you might be missing out if you haven't taken the short ride up Piedras from I-10 to Kiki's.

My best guitar playing buddy from high school was El Paso's 1st traffic fatality in 1982 (RIP Mike). He was ridding his Suzuki 850 shaft drive coming north on Zaragosa under the border highway when a pickup, coming down the off-ramp, ran the stop sign and killed him. He and I (on my little GS650 then) made more than one trip to each of those locations, among many others.
