My Vstrom died on me in Walcha
Flat Battery no charge from Stator.
Original Suzuki stator 670 Australian dollars.
Getting rewind done for 350.
Any other upgrade parts I should consider while getting work done.
2015 XT 650

Wish you well on the re-wind, they don't tend to last long. Suzuki fixed the stator issues "reportedly" with the recall, when/if this one fails prematurely I recommend going with the latest OEM unit.

Why not?
I know a few people here in Croatia that have done it on their 650's.
Been working without a problem for years now.

If the person doing the rewinding knows what he is doing, and is using well insulated wire it should be fine. Much cheaper then OEM or aftermarket.

The re-wind outfit seems to be a solid company. I would start another thread asking specifically the Australian forum memebers if they have experience with this company or if they can recommend an alternative.

The guy who started it worked for Kawasaki Australia
When out on his own 8 year's ago.
We know OEM burn out at 45 - 55 k Ks so I figure after market specialist gota be as good or better
I'll update progress

Yes the faulty stators did, have yet to hear of a single failure from the newest/latest model. Sounds like who did yours knows what he's doing, nothing quite like a reputable small business to do top quality work.

Does that 650 generation suffer from loose rotor magnets? In that case, while you've got that side of the engine opened up, I would do the JB Weld reinforcement at the same time. Can't hurt.

650 have had a one piece magneto for a long time. I think from 2006 or something like that.

If you go this rewind route, I strongly recommend that you pay a little extra to have the new magnet wire be the type with the highest operating temperature rating. The wire will cost more and may require extra procurement effort, and terminating it will require some extra labor, but it will improve longevity. I know for a fact that the Suzuki stator is being run much hotter than ordinary magnet wire can reliably tolerate.


The advice given above to replace the failed stator with the recently released revision is good. If Suzuki has had it wound with that higher-temp wire, it is a good solution.

If you look at the website of the repair shop, that's what they are using. They seem to know their business.

My local shop's re-wind has been a huge success! But I combined it with an SH847 RR, which is the bee's knees.

I urge you to upgrade the RR, blaustrom.

And does the 2015 have a voltmeter? If not, add one!

650's since I believe 2006 have encapsulated magnets in the rotor, so nothing to dislodge or go bad. :smile2: The 14 to current 1000's also have the same encapsulated magnets in rotor, why they never made that change in previous gen 1000's was a bad move on their part.
