Before I plunk down my money can anyone who actually has a gel and a standard seat say whether the gel is taller and wider?

I searched the forum for an answer and was left still wanting. Thanks!

At a recent Strom only ride, I was able to examine the standard seats for the DL1000, DL650 and the gel seat. I own a 650 and wanted a wider and more padded seat. Sitting on several bikes this is what I learned.
  • - The DL1000 seat is about an inch thicker and 1-2 inches wider than the DL650 seat.
    - The gel seat is about the same thickness and width as the stock DL1000 seat.
I was lucky to meet someone willing to trade his DL1000 seat. I'm 6'2" with a 34" inseam and I'm still able to flat foot the Strom.

I also upgraded to a 1K seat on my 650. It appears the same, but you notice the difference instantly when you sit on it, and its far more comfortable on long rides. The only bad part is I can't find a good position for the mirrors, which has me looking for extenders or risers. Sorry, I don't have any experience with the gel seat, but I can strongly recommend the 1K seat over the 650 saddle.

My Gel seat came in a week ago and although I have not been able to put any serious miles on it, I can say that it is a huge improvement over the stock standard seat. About the same height and width but much firmer and the crown is cut back about an inch and a half so it doesn't hit you in the backside. The Gel seat is firm but not hard, pretty flat, and reminds me of the very good Gunfighter seats that Corbin used to make (Corbin still makes a Gunfighter but it is now a different style seat).

The Gel seat is the seat that should come standard on the DL1000.

can anyone post pictures of the Gel seat... I purchased one off the net (personal sale) and I don't think it's the gel seat.

How can you tell the difference? Part # some place? Cover?

I put it on my DL1000K5 and it fit "funny" too. More space up by the tank. IIRC. (will check again) My thoughts is it is a stock 650 seat. (it's much lower.)

Thanks.

I believe you can tell the difference by the cover. The stock DL1000 came with a smooth vinyl cover. The Gel Seat has a textured vinyl cover
'06 1K seat is textured

Both are "textured"

So which one IS a gel seat?

I purchased the "gel" seat off the net for my son's bike thinking it was like mine which may or may not be a gel seat... feels like it may be If it's not I want my $ back.

New what is supposed to be a gel seat (does not feel like it to me!)

Same stuff they use for fake boobs. Ride down to the local strip joint and explain to the employees you'd like to make a tactile comparison.

If you're lucky, it might take severl trip. 8)

I thought the older DL1000 seats had a smooth texture, but I could be wrong on that (I have a DL650).

However, the Gel Seat is the only one that has the smooth vinyl trim piece on the front near the tank. See here: http://www.suzukicycles.com/Accessories/list.aspx?modelId=ca4a6b60-a1fb-4471-8696-70c31a928f57&accessoryCategoryId=6b1c7937-4105-452a-905f-e531b9d9c7b9

So based on your pictures, I would say the new one is a Gel Seat. I can look more closely at my Gel Seat when I get home to see if there are any identifying numbers or any other way to verify it.

BTW - the Gel Seat has a very firm feel to it. You can't really feel the Gel.

Agree, the new seat is a Gel, and I think if you measure the Gel you will find that the rider seating area is longer than the standard -- at least mine is.

MCrider and marathonman thanks for the feedback..

Guess the seat IS a gel seat..

If you look at the top views you can see the gel does have a longer seat area than the one I have. (It's back to the "L" on the side cover sticker and the stock is to the "D") So you have about 1" to 1.5" of added rearward movement.

Thanks for ending the debate.
