hi guy on my 06 vstrom 1000 i want to put a 2 teeth more in the back so that will make it have more torque so will that take away a lot from the top end or mid range power so i guess t would be a 17 front and 43 in the back i think just wondering
I think you've counted correctly. What you should get out of this combo is a little quicker acceleration but less top speed per gear. This means your theoretical top speed is also less, but since the original gearing with a de-restricted engine would be able to do in excess of 140mph (faster than the stroms aerodynamics safely permit) you'll be fine. You may also notice a slight drop in your fuel mileage, but you (like me) have a 1000 so that doesn't seem to be a primary concern. Also good choice to change the back, not the front. And for going two teeth up because if you don't like it you could back off one tooth.
I went 17/45 and am pleased with the results. I did lose top end (super slab) speeds; it revs higher than I care for, but most of my riding is secondary roads and twisties That's where this combo pays off.
And I agree, IMO it's better to go up on the rear sprocket than go down on the front...16T could lead to more rapid chain wear. That's my opinion, YMMV.
