New member here. Currently I own a 2000 Yamaha R6 and I love it. It was my first real bike and I've really enjoyed the time spent with it. However, I've been taking longer trips with it and even have aspirations of taking multiple day trips on a motorcycle and the R6 just isn't doing the job. Especially when carrying the wife; I can't do more than a couple hours with her and clearly the R6 isn't built to carry a whole lot of gear. So I'm going to call up the owner of this tomorrow: 2002 Suzuki DL1000 Vstrom

I'm curious if the owner is a member on this forum. Also curious about the service intervals on Vee Stroms. The bike has 31000; my R6 would have for sure needed a valve check and possible adjustment by then. I can check all the normal things, just wondering if there's anything glaring I should ask about. Oh and I've never ridden a V twin before so I'm looking forward to hopefully test riding it. From what I've seen on the site from poking around this seems like a great group of people. Maybe I can join you soon!

Just my opinion, if you can afford it, keep the r6 as well. I traded in my cbr600rr for my 650 vstrom and miss it on occasion. Been in the market for a second bike as a toy for a month or so now.

I wish I could! But I can't swing both so I would need to sell the R6 before getting the Vee.

The valve intervals are (I think) 15k miles, but my K3 Vee (at 56k miles) has never had a valve out of spec. I'm running my next interval up to 25k. As for things to watch out for- the bike will likely feel REALLY bad from 3-4K ish RPM. This is due to a fault in the stock clutch basket- almost all Vee's have it, and it's never left anyone stranded. As I understand it, the metal wears down a bit and causes the damping springs to rattle a bit. There are fixes you can do from several forum members for ~$300, or you can live with it (as I do).

The Vee will be a completely different monster from what you're used to. Power will be down a bit (though they can be massaged back up to 100hp at the rear wheel if you so desire, or you could throw an SV1000 motor in the frame if you're really desperate), but the glorious part of Vee ownership is being able to loft the front wheel from 3k RPM :D Seriously, if you pick up a Power Commander or get a Yosh box tune, you'll be able to crack the throttle from 2.5k RPM in just about any gear and she'll go. Clutch chudder might make it feel a bit gnarly, but that's never really bothered me. The bike comes alive above 4.5k RPM.

I ride twisties with a bunch of guys on everything from GSX-R's to Sprint ST 1050's and I've NEVER been left behind. On the straights (especially above 80 MPH) they'll walk away, but they'll also generate more LEO hatred than you will :D

You will like the seating position, I just bought one almost exactly like yours, the one bad thing was the clutch chudder, (very common) a new reworked clutch basket took care of that, have fun, ride safe:thumbup:
