I am installing a Speedo DRD from 12 O'Clock Labs, but getting to the connector is causing me a major headache!:headbang:

On my bike (2009 DL650A) the connector is up under the front of the airbox. I can touch it with my finger-tip but there isn't enough slack to pull it out. With the top of the airbox off I can see it tucked underneath, but again I can't get to it. It is too far down and there isn't enough slack in the wires.

Logically it seems that if I take the airbox off it would be easy to make the connection, but I can't see the clamp holding the airbox to the front throttle-body! The shop manual has a wholly unhelpful picture of the clamp, but I can't even tell where the picture was taken from much less where the clamp actually is! :furious:

Can anyone tell me how to get the airbox off? ...or should I just give it up as a bad job.:thumbdown:

When I initially installed mine on a 2011 I believe I unbolted the R/R and went in from the side. I have no idea if the Regulator/Rectifier is located in the same place on your '12 or not however. Yep, royal pain to get the hidden connector disconnected.

OOPS: I saw "12 O'Clock" as a 2012 model.

It is probably easier to compress the horn on the front throttle body in the air box and leave the horn connected to the throttle body when removing the air box. In cold weather, a hair dryer can be used to make it more pliable. The '09 and '11 have the parts in the same places so an R/R removal working on one will work on the other.

OK the good news first: Removing the R/R helped me see where it was, but I still needed the airbox pan off to get to it. Greywolf's suggestion to just pull it off the front horn worked like a champ. A little WD40 and a squeeze or three and off it came. Here it is with the airbox pulled back (check out the nifty little shelf from AdventureTech with 2 power points and a voltage monitor in the middle!):


Here is a fuzzy pic of the connector looking down in front of the throttle-body:


Next comes the bad news. After wrestling with the locking tabs on the connector for over an hour (there is almost no slack in the harness down there) I finally got it apart. Yay! Miller Time!!:hurray:

...but wait! The connector doesn't seem to fit into the plug on the 12 O'Clock Labs DRD!:confused: More struggles with tight harness.....:headbang:

Guess what? The plugs may look the same on the outside but they are NOT the same on the inside!:yikes:

Here is a shot of the 2 connector halves on the 12 O'Clock gizmo. Notice the 2 ridges on the top of the female half, and the straight sides on the male.


Now (another fuzzy picture) of the bikes connectors apart. Notice there are NO ridges on the female side and there is a shoulder on the male side.


I checked the package and yes, this unit is supposed to fit "Suzuki V-Strom DL-650 (2004-2013)" along with a host of others.

Did I spend hours getting to and taking apart the WRONG connector? (Just shoot me now if I did!) It sure looks like the right connector on the outside, it is in the right place, and it has the tell-tale pink wire Greywolf has referred to elsewhere.

At this point I am about ready to return it to AdventureTech and admit defeat. I can keep making the 8% conversion in my head; hey...it helps keep me sharp! BUT if I can salvage this without spending another week on foot I am willing to try.

Help is always appreciated!

The gear position switch also has a 3 wire connector with a pink wire. Blue, pink and black/white are the colors. The speedo sensor has orange/red and black/white wire plus a pink on one side and a pink/white on the other.

Just checked the wire colors and they match the ones reported by Greywolf. It appears the connector IS the correct one, and that for some reason my bike just got an odd connector at the factory.

I am going to try to get hold of someone at 12 O'Clock Labs to see if they have ever run into this issue before. I will let you know what I find out.

Suck-Sess!:hurray:

Brooks from 12 O'Clock Labs called me and explained what had happened. I will try to post the short video he sent, but here is the explanation:

Normally the female half of the connector has 2 parts that are "clicked" together at the factory; an outer shell and an inner retainer that holds the weather seal in place. Either they didn't get these 2 pieces fastened at the factory or, and this is what I think happened, I pulled them apart in my struggles to get the connector apart:biggrinjester:. For anyone else who is doing this farkle on a VStrom, to get the connector apart all you need to do is to lightly lift the single tab in the middle of the long side of the connector with a screwdriver or even your fingernail. The other "tabs" are for holding the retainer in. If you are really struggling to get the connector apart you may be working on the wrong tabs.

Anyway, when I got my connector apart, the retainer was still stuck on the male half (which the factory calls the female half due to the contacts arrangement). I took it off the male half, stuck it back into the female half, and hey-presto it all works!:thumbup:

I almost did that myself. Push the right catch in the right place and the connector comes apart easily. Work on the wrong place and, well, not so much.
