It appears to me, that there are already 8 Southern commitments to The V-Strom Gathering, June 26 - 28, 2009. Would you like arrange to meet in convenient areas on the way up and out, so that we might "share the ride" ?

I am committed to go, and a couple of my non-Strom riding friends are seriously considering the trip as well. I was just wondering if there is any interest in a "small group" ride. The Google Maps search says it's approx. 1400miles for me from Chattanooga by way of Nashville, St.Louis, Kansas City, Omaha, Sioux Falls, to Rapid City. I'm thinking that's three 7 hour days or four 5 1/2 hour days - I care not which ( I don't think I want two 10 1/2 hour days, though). Some have been rumored to be "camping" on the way out. I don't have that option, but I think it would still work with a little planning (motels near camgrounds or campgrounds with cabins, etc.).

Does any body have an interest in coordinating with me on the ride out ?

Lemmeknow.

Jon "V-Rocious"

Chattanooga, TN

P.S. As a side note, I am not planning on riding back the same way I rode out. I have a friend who lives near Denver, CO, that has been begging me to come out and let him show me around Colorado and Wyoming (he has a classic BMW GS Adventure Air Head). I'm planning on several days there, as well. Probably will make it back to Tennessee around July 4th. If there is any interest among you for this side trip, following The Gathering, let's see how that could work out, as well.

Anyone interested in attending the North American V-Strom Gathering in Rapid City SD? I have planned some Iron Butt rides ( http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm ) getting there. But if I find someone that wants to ride up with me from the Coast and can’t handle the endurance thing or wants to ride a more relaxed pace I can change those plans. I intend to camp at KOAs or similar grounds.

Confederado, You are a true Southern Gentleman. Thanks for your responses. I'm not getting much (or should I say any) response from other Southerners regarding riding out together. I do have a couple of non - Strom friends who are talking about going. I'll try to firm up their commitment. June will be here before we know it, so I'm trying to get my plans set. I responded to your KOA offer on the other thread, also. I have reservations at The Ramkota Motel, but I might cancel them, depending on who commits to go with me / us. The date and time for the Omaha arrival are what I was already planning, so that should work out well. Again, depending on who is going, the three person Kabin in Omaha may not be big enough for everyone. May be we could reserve an additional Kabin or a close-by Motel if more than two are joining us. Thanks.

OK, I'll be polite and respond..;)

I'm not sure yet..

Yes, I'd probably be interested but I just don't know what my schedule will be like. Depends on if I have more time on the front end or back-end. My thoughts are that anyone from the SE interested should certainly watch this thread. Perhaps we can start posting our planned itineraries as things come together and see where/when we could meet up?

Right now, I'm thinking about hitting the super-slab until I get west of the Big Muddy, then take some time and enjoy the cornfields etc. Camp or hotel will likely depend on if my Wife comes along or not.. Having other company, at least for part of the route anyway, would be nice..!

MrMac,

Thanks for your response. Are you east of Atlanta, where the Falcons training camp used to be ? I almost spent some time there in 1981.

Right now, I'm thinking, get to The Event as fast as "normal" (NO Iron Butt):

Approx. 1400 miles for me from Chattanooga to Rapid City. I'm figuring 450 - 500 miles per day average.

Leave Chattanooga, Tuesday June 23 to St. Louis, MO (446 miles)(could pick up some "eastern riders" on the way thru Nashville)

Leave St. Louis, Wednesday June 24 to Omaha, NE (433 miles)(join up with Confederado - up from Mississppi - here in Omaha @ KOA, for the night)

Leave Omaha, Thursday June 25 to Rapid City, SD (525 miles)

Also, I'm taking the long way home after The Gathering, by way of Colorado and Wyoming, before heading back east. A friend of mine lives in the Denver area, and has agreed to take me (others, too) on some great riding (maybe even a little camping/fishing), in Wyoming and Colorado. Tentatively returning to Chattanooga on July 4. There you have it, THE V-Rocious itinerary, in a nutshell. LEMMEKNOW !!

...
Yep. About 1.5 miles away. In '81, this was still country. Now, during rush hour I can walk the distance faster than I can drive it.

Hopefully my plans will start to gel within a few weeks, as I sort out my work schedule for the next few months.

MrMac,

If it turns out that my plans fit in with yours, love to have you and/or your wife come along. Either way, we'll see you at The Gathering.

BTW, are you going to go to The V-Strom Get - Together East VII (2009), May 14-17, 2009, in Stecoah, NC this year? I'm planning to go. That's about 2 1/2 hour ride for me to get there. I figure that the riding to get there and while there, will be a good "tune-up" for The Gathering in June.

Take care.

Update for Southerners on The V-Strom Gathering, June 26 - 28

I'm posting my itinerary once again for the trip out to the V-Strom Gathering in Rapid City,SD in June, to see if anyone from the South or Southeast has been able to firm up their plans enough to know if they want to try to "Group Ride" out to The Event.

Approx. 1400 Miles from Chattanooga to Rapid City. I'm figuring 3 days for the outbound trip from here.

1) Tuesday, June 23 - Chattanooga to St Louis (446 miles)
Going through Nashville - could pick up some Easterners there or anywhere else as we go Northwest.

2) Wednesday, June 24 - St Louis to Omaha (433 Miles)
Confederado from Mississippi (who will be working on a "Saddle Sore" Iron Butt Award) and I are meeting up at the KOA in Omaha on Wed. June 24.

3) Thursday, July 25 - Omaha to Rapid City (approx 525 miles)
Check In at The Gathering.

Is there any planning interest yet, or still "too early" for ya'll ? I will be at The V-Strom Get - Together East VII, May 14 - 17, 2009. I'm going to use this Event as a Mini- Tuneup for tthe June Gathering. We can discuss it then, but that might be cutting it kinda close with planning/coordinating for The Gathering Trip in June. I know we have a "spur of the moment" thread for the Southeast and if that's how WE are - that's cool.

I replied in the "event" thread, but I'm going to seriously think about attending. My wife will be in NY at the time, and I won't have anything better to do.

I haven't crossed SD in a long time, but the trip was dreadfully boring. Hopefully the speed limit is substantially higher than the 55 mph limit I previously endured. I'm thinking 80-85 mph is a better cruising speed for those conditions.

LarryB,

Have you told TheBlade that you are coming? He needs to add you to the "I'M IN LIST". I have my reservations at the Quality Inn (The new Headquarters Hotel).

I haven't, other than responding to his thread in "events". Do I need to PM him? I've got a scheduling issue I need to work out.

LarryB,

The V-Strom Gathering web site is very interesting and informative. Once you have your itinerary fixed, then you should let him know. You will also need Hotel or KOA reservations in Rapid City. We are meeting Confederado, from Mississippi, at the Omaha KOA on the way out. He has reserved a three person cabin. I am not sure yet if those who are riding out with us are Campers, Cabiners, or Hotelers. We will probably end up needing to make some arrangements for the St. Louis And Omaha overnights on the way out, when we find out how many total riders we end up with. My back limits my camping times, but I can allow myself a cabin every once in a while. I am planning to bring a sleeping bag (small backpacker's style) and a pillow, because the KOA cabins don't provide sheets, blankets or pillows. Confederado is going to continue to be a KOA Cabin person after we reach Rapid City. He has reserved a 4 Person Cabin there. He is willing to share the cabin with three others, to help give someone who needs it, a place to stay. It will also help each other by splitting the cost between four.

The last thing I have to do is send in my Friday and Saturday buffet reservations. $20.00 per nite for those two nights and TheBlade wants/needs the money in advance for those two dinners. I think all the other food is "on your own". There seems to be plenty to do and places to eat around there. By yhe way, The Quality Inn "Headquarters Hotel" provides a nice and free breakfast - included in the price of the room ($104 + tax per nite).

Hope you can work it out. I am really looking forward to this Event. I planned to come back in November - counting down the months, weeks and days.
