Things seem a bit quiet in the New England section of the forum, so I guess that means we've been too busy riding. :hurray:

Maybe we need a place to report our local rides. Feel free to share.

The pillion and I recently got back from a short 3-day venture to western MA. The Berkshires are awesome this time of year. We camped out 2 nights at Pittsfield State Forest, then took back/dirt roads south down the mountain range into CT and then headed up the NY side into VT. Beautious and highly recommended.

Here's a snapshot of the route:

The southwestern-most part of Mass. is amazing, and you really feel like you're in the wilderness. There's a 10-mile dirt road that goes from Mt. Washington State Reservation into CT that's really REALLY remote, like banjo-playing remote!

Here's a pic of our sweet campsite next to a brook at Pittsfield SF:

So, feel free to share some of your New England rides.

This one has been seen here several times. And yes, Quebec is spelled incorrectly.

This Nova Scotia ride is mostly New England. Also contains video of the infamous Black Lab in motion that was not actually shot by Black Lab himself.

Nice! Any recommendations on where to camp around Bar Harbor?
I stay at The Colony in Hulls Cove. Cheap and clean and right out of 1955, July and August cost more. Been going there for years, at least half a dozen times a year.

There are also two NP campgrounds at Seawall and Blackwoods. And a few years ago (yikes 2008!), we stayed on Somes Sound.

It's been a while but the last time I stayed at one of the in park campgrounds it wasn't great. Sites were very close to each other and it was packed in season. Might not be too bad out of season but not a lot of privacy or quiet IMO.

There's a state park in Lamoine that's supposed to be decent. My guess is that you stayed at Blackwoods.

I stayed at Blackwoods,,,,,it was Sept so it was off season and not so crowded....If it was busyier I would recommend Seawall.....it's a little more private.......Blackwoods is closer to Bar Harbor (where the action is) if that's what you like.........TD

A few years ago, we took our kayaks up to Acadia and stayed at a sweet little campground, north of Bar Harbor, that had very private sites right on the water on Schoodic Point. I'm pretty sure it was called Sunset Something Campground.

We headed down to the Rhode Island coast last weekend -- never been there. It was a nice ride and since it was 'off season' there wasn't much traffic.

Here's the route:

There are plenty of places where the road gets real close to the sea, and there are a couple of huges bridge crossings with great views.

Spelling is my strongpoint. Keeping up with all the electronic gadgetry swirling around us these days is my Achilles heel! For example, how the heck does pmk make up and post those nifty maps? Beats the heck outta me? I still haven't figured out how to make my Garmin Nuvi "show me" surface road/back road routes that avoid slabs. I guess I'll figure it out over the winter while my bike is asleep in my buddy's barn.

On a different note, looking at pmk's route down to RI on 95 gives me the willies. I just can't imagine riding all that way on 95. Yikesaroonie! Aren't you worried that some bonehead cager is gonna take you out? Okay, I guess I'm still a wuss when it comes to navigating heavily-travelled slabs. I avoid 128/93/95 like the plague!

Somewhere in the menu system, there's an item called "Avoidances" and what you're looking for is there.

Avoid highways, toll roads, dirt roads, ferries, u-turns, car pool lanes, etc.

I think it's still legal to shoot a Rhode Islander for crossing the border. :biggrinjester:
Watch your back, the Twisted folk will come hunting for you. It's illegal in RI to not wear blaze during hunting season. :green_lol:

Buzzards Bay / RI Coast

Had a great trip last week with the pillion.

We took backroads down to Fairhaven and stayed at an Inn next to the water.

They we cruised all over the backroads of the south coast, enjoying the views, the water and some great dirt and back roads.

We also saw some wierd things, like this "fork" in the road. The strange thing here is that this is also the border between MA and RI, and the MA residents are actually completely separated from the rest of the Bay State. There's no way for them to get to the rest of MA w/o going through Rhode Island. Does anyone know why a boundary was created here? Bizarre.

It was great seeing the southern coast during the off season -- we pretty much had the place to ourselves.
