Have the "winter residents" arrived in your area? Yesterday it seemed like the traffic has doubled overnight here in Bradenton, how about where you live.

TX Snowbirds

Traffic from the upper Midwest is getting heavier,ie motorized retirement homes, here on I-20 and I-10 headed southeast toward the Golden Triangle. Couple of close calls one in work truck and 1 on bike nothing major. I passed one motorhome on I-10 west of Ft. Stockton on mon. The kind that cost almost 10 times what I paid for my house 15 yrs ago was after 11:00 and the driver was a lady in here 70's hair in curlers and still in her bathrobe. Got to love'um!!

I must be part of the problem.

I have a foot in both camps. I was born in Ontario, and moved to Florida in 1989. Florida is my home, but I visit Canada once or twice each year for a total of 1-2 months. This year, I rode up and back in April, mainly to ride with the Ontario Stromtroopers on April 26, then I toted the bike up and back in the summer.

There is no shame in admitting a non-Florida origin, because most of the state's residents were born elsewhere ... and the proportion is probably rising. In Florida, the leaves do not change colors, but the license plates sure do. I think I am an expert at recognizing license plates from distant states and provinces.

I consider myself fortunate to be able to live where many people pay lots of money to visit. Some of their money stays here, and the taxation structure certainly favors permanent residents.

12bar and Canadian FZ6 (eff-ZED-6, eh?), I would appreciate an opportunity to ride with you, either one at a time or together. Specifically, I hope to ride Nov 14 2009 with Cruisin' Al across the state to Ormond Beach, and in August 2010 with Gerhard and V-Tom and Heavy and the other Ontario road toads.

Concerning snow birds and the hazards they present, I think they represent only a small increase in risk and delay, certainly less of both than we would face by visiting a city such as Atlanta or Detroit, both of which are generally no-fun places to ride. Many snow birds are courteous enough to provide a front license plate (sometimes even after they move here and get a FL plate for the rear!).

Keep-um eyes peeled!

Nothing is stopping you.

Keith, I would like to make the ride on Nov 14th if at all possible.
I think the order of doing things is to arrange your accomodation, then leave a message in the thread for that ride, then show up. As Yoda says, "There is no TRY, only DO ... or do not."

If you do not already know Ironmorph, JRShaw, and Mystrom, then it is time you met them. They are all cheerful, erudite, and resourceful gentlemen, who can ride circles around me at any speed, and I have enjoyed their company on several occasions.
