A local school (Chattanooga State Comm College) has a MSF course Id like to take. But the registration form online, which can be faxed or mailed in, asks for DoB, SS number, Drivers lic number and either a CC number or a check.

Im just leary of all that info on one form at what I imagine is a not an overly secure location.

Any thoughts to allay my fears.

I don't see the need for either a driver's license number or SS number. The other info is common on MSF forms, at least in my state.

They are listed on the TN MSF website so I am sure they are legit. Not sure why they would need your SS# for. I would not give them your SS#. In Illinois, DOB and Drivers license are both on the form when you come to class but not when you register.

You definitely have reasons to be worried in this day and age. Have you tried calling them about your concerns?

Identity Theft...

The BIG THREE for identity theft are (1) full name, (2) date of birth, and (3) social security account number. I would always question why anyone I was doing business with needed all three. Although a drivers license number may not include your date of birth, it is a direct link to that information. You should never carry the Big Three together in your wallet, purse, or any other item. They need to be kept secret and separate as much as possible.

I am from Chattanooga also! Chatt state is legit, they want your drivers license to ensure you have a motorcycle designation on your license. I believe you can opt out of giving them your SS#.

It would be easy to confirm that the college is sponsoring the course, Call them up and find out why they need the SS#.

I'm guessing that the school is legit but used a standardized form that was copied from some other agency. Cheaper and easier to borrow a form than to develop your own.
If this was a book club forum you could say it was "Poetic License" but for us it would be something else.
