Hello everyone...Bought the DL650 last Saturday and had 370 miles on her by the end of the next day. What a great bike! Right on the money for a big guy's(6'2" 220lb) first bike.

Anyway, I have been babying the bike like the manual recommends (under 5K until 500 miles) but am having problems driving in San Jose traffic with these limitations. What are your experiences with break-in? I have the feeling that I haven't even seen what the bike can do yet. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

You certainly haven't had any fun with the wee strom yet :) Much like my magna, the fun doesn't start til after 5 grand. Your motor is the exact opposite of a harley vtwin, which is starting to weez and shake apart just over 5k rpm. Sometimes it takes time to realize that. This motor loves to rev. Let it breathe!

I'm now at 430 miles and have been reading online at several different sources that a more aggressive break-in is better for the bike. Apparently, the more aggressive the break-in, the better the piston rings seal. One thing that they everyone seems to agree upon is to not run the engine at constant RPM's like on the freeway. Well, once I had about 130miles on the bike, I did just that (not knowing any better) and I have since done it a lot.

Does anyone know if I have caused damage? Or should I not be too worried about it? Also, I am going to start riding harder (I have stayed under 5K this whole time) to attempt to get a better break-in. Anyone suggest that I stick to what the manufacturer recommends? Thanks.

Go ahead and change your oil at 500miles and start riding the second phase of break in. I did a lot of highway miles the first 500, haven't had any problem. Now at 2500. Would be a lot more, had a forced hiatus.

Chris, I'm a guy who is into motorcycle restoration and most of that stuff you read about constantly varying speeds and such applies to older technology like my 72 Bonneville. You'll never break in the rings on an old Triumph if you don't ride it correctly during break-in. It certainly doesn't hurt even on these newer bikes, but they are much more forgiving and break in much easier without too much special care. The main thing with break in on a modern bike is to avoid letting the engine get too hot especially in the first 50-100 miles, avoid high revs according to the manufacturer's suggestions, and change oil after about 500 miles or so (I actually do this after 50 and again at 500 on the old classics). So don't get too carried away with cracking it above 5000 rpm right away. It's not going to hurt to do it for short bursts if you want to experience what the bike can do, but don't get in a habit of doing it until after the break-in period is over and don't do it when it's blistering hot outside. Pick a cool day for that kind of fun. It's probably a good idea to try to avoid constant speeds on the highway if you can during the first few hundred miles. The trick is just to close or open the throttle for a second every few minutes. If you are in a lot of traffic you probably do that anyway. But this isn't really a necessity on modern bikes. I do it, but just to be extra cautious. Also, stay away from synthetic oils until the bike is broken in, then use them if you wish, but many don't ever use them. It's a personal preference.

Thanks for the replies. I took it up past 5k today several times. I noticed that the bike is really buzzy and loud at 6k+, yet is is beautifully smooth under 5K. I wonder if this is because the 6k+ range is "uncharted territory" and isn't broke-in yet like the lower engine speeds are. Or is the engine just very noisy in the higher revs? Does it quiet down when it becomes more broken in? Let me know what your experiences are. Thanks.

BTW, I liked the power that I felt when I gunned it...this bike is definately plenty powerful for me and my needs.

My bike initially had that buz but has smoothed out with miles and engine settling in. It also improves at about 7K.
