Ok long time lurker motorcycle tire newbie questions.

I have owned my strom for 2 years. I put about a total of about 4k miles on the bike . The shinko 705s on the bike were relatively new when I got the bike.

The date on the rubber is 4511 so they are not forever old.

On the rear tire I am starting to see a little bit dry rot on the inner sides of the tread blocks. I have found a couple of 1 cm cuts inside the tread blocks too.

The rot is not on the entire tire just in that area.

I know I am going to replace it but I wondered if I can get the rest of the season on this one.

SO my question is can I expect shinko tires to rot after 4 years?
I have only 4 k on these tires and no idea how many the previous owner put on.

was/is there something I can do to prevent this?

I know that most of this is conditional and or opinions. I want your opinions I know very little about motorcycle tires.

You have the infamous Shinko delamination!

I don't think I would be riding on that tire, replace it asap. The cut you refer to looks like the rubber pulling apart as the loose components flex.

This is a known issue with them, the older tire ( bias ply ) had many cases of this and the newer radial version still had some issues reported. Yours may still be the bias ply.

I would get a new set of tires, that definitely looks like defective tires. Probably not cuts at all, but rather bulges that are cracking open and starting to delaminate from the belts.

Probably an old set when Shinko was having rubber issues. Contact them, probably worth a try getting them replaced. I like 705's but the quality control has me worried slightly, haven't had a failure personally. But, the bad batch soured lots of people on them. I ran them on my smaller bikes, but the Strom gets Tourances for now. Haven't read about any major issues with the original Tourances

Tourances have had issues too, they had allot of bad front tires. The Shinkos are up to par with any other major tire company out there, matter of fact I run them on both of my bikes. The bias ply 705 has had issues in the past, not really aware of any with the radials.

Eight months ago, Shinko warranteed my front bias ply 705 that were on my bike when I got it. They replaced it with a radial. I emailed Shinko directly. Can't hurt to ask.

I put on a 705 a few months back and it will probably be toast at 6K miles. It's worked really well for me for the price. I'll be getting more 705's in the future. I think the radials are a better build.

The "larger" and "smaller" cut looks like rock/nail puncture type damage. I would consider that "normal" in an off road tire.

The fine cracking you see is due to heat cycling of the rubber, age and the hard compound.

I've seen that same fine cracking pattern around tread blocks from damn near every tire company when the tires get old, or if they are a very hard compound (or both). Hell the Bridgestone 023 on the front of my DL650 when I bought it looked like that (but it was made in back in 09) when I bought it. I replaced it as soon as I got home.

Rubber's life is determined by it's makeup(hard/soft compound), environment (including how it's used) and it's age. How you USE the tire affects the tire life/cracking (under/over inflation and/or overloading the tire for the inflation pressure).

The harder compound in the 705's that gives them long life, also leads them to be prone to cracking. You almost never see those kind of cracks in a very soft "track" compound tire. Only in "hard" or "high mileage" compound tires.

Yes, I would get them replaced. Sure, I would contact Shinko, it can't hurt. But I don't see anything there that screams "manufacturing defect" or "delamination". My guess is Shinko will blame it on overheating the tire due to improper inflation.loading. I'm not saying that's what this is, I'm just playing the devil's advocate here.

Replace. As some have said this is probably due to older tire and hard rubber compound that starts to crack. I plan on trying the Full Bore tire next. A friend runs them on his Tiger and loves them. Its a 705 made with a different rubber compound at Shinko plant for Full Bore. About the same price....

They do look like puncture damage at first. But, if you had seen all the pictures posted about this tire and the start of the delamination you might agree that this is the exact same thing. The crack along the tread block and the "tear" is typical of a tire delamination.

Fine cracking is normal on older tires and I agree it is not a problem. But that type of cracking is consistent around the tire.

The Shinko 705 is actually a rather soft compound tire. Part of why it works so well on pavement and in the wet.....and doesn't get high mileage.

Let's get real here...

A new rear 705 is a lousy $86.

Replace it. It's not worth riding in fear or taking any chances for that amount of money.

It's hard to tell from your photos exactly what's going on (need pics from the side to see if there's the bulging of delamination), but that cut, wherever it came from, means the tire is DONE. Replace it PDQ and ASAP.


I had a set of the old bias-ply 705s that delaminated, and the retailer (Motorcycle Superstore) worked with Shinko to refund the purchase price. The radials are great tires, and I've used a few sets on my DL1000 and the bias-ply versions on my KLR650.

In your case, you're not the original purchaser, so the situation becomes a little more murky. Shinko might do something for you, or they might tell you to talk to the retailer first (and you probably have no idea who that was anyway). In any case, do NOT wait on Shinko or anyone else -- the important thing is to fix the safety issue. You can argue about the money later.

Good input

Thanks for all of your input. I am not riding the bike till I can replace them.

I think the thing that makes me by into the delam argument is that the tires are only 4 years old, and the cracks are only appearing in part of the tire.

So stupid question. I drive the bike to work every day and park it in the sun. at the house it is in a carport. Will sunlight cause the cracking?
I know that sun light breaks every thing down but I am thinking Many many years not just 4.

Thanks again for all the input. I will see if Shenko will replace it. But I probably will just by a new one while waiting. I want to get riding again.

Park it in the rain, park it in the fog, park it under the Gibbous moon, afour-year-old tire not supposed to disintegrate like this.

Unless it's a Shinko, perhaps.

I tried this tire with low expectations.

They were not met.

bunch of fear mongers on here, tire is holding air, use it.

My last rear Motorcycle tire was a Shinko 705, I ran over a piece of sheet metal and left a tear you could see through, tire got me almost 30KM's home with zero air and the bead never came off the rim.

Then again, I have never had a rear Motorcycle tire last more than 4 months so I have no concept of having 4 year old tires on your bike...

Me neither. When I lived in ON if my wife and I went to the track for a full weekend between two bikes we would go through 6 sets of tires. I've never had a set of tires on any bike I've owned last more than a year so I can't imagine having a 4 year old tire on my bike. I'd think they would be like hockey pucks.

I do think the Shinko 705 is a great tire though no matter if you get the bias or radial. My wife's been using the bias on her F650GS and I think they are a great tire. I have a set ordered for my Vee we will see how they hold up.

I would ride on that tire

If it were my bike I would order a replacement and change the tire when the replacement arrived. I would continue to ride the bike normally until then.

The cracking around the edges of the blocks is normal for these 705's. That rip or tear is just that, a rip or tear. I am on my 6th set and they all look like that after a while. I like em and will continue to run em. $150 for a set delivered to my doorstep. I mount/dismount myself and use "ride on" sealant to balance and puncture protect.
