I've had my 02 DL1000 for 4 days and have put on about 1000 km (625 miles). All seems fine except that it sometimes does not want to shift easily into 5th or 6th. This is especially the case if I'm going up through the gears very quickly. I'm not talking speed shifting here, just fairly rapid acceleration such as on an entry ramp where you want to get up to speed quickly. It does it sometimes even with fairly slow acceleration.

Basically what happens is that when you try to shift from 4th to 5th or 5th to 6th it just doesn't shift. When you let the clutch out, you're in the same gear. If you try it immediately again, it won't shift. If you wait about 5 seconds and then try it, it will shift, at least most of the time. Downshifting is never a problem.

My 72 Triumph Bonneville does this too, but I don't expect to find it happening on a newer bike.

I've looked around on the site and couldn't find any other reports of this happening. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

I would like to know more about this also.
Mine does this sometimes too. Mainly from 4th to 5th. I have to make sure not to let off the throttle too much and make a full stroke with the toe or it will hang between gears. Sometimes I can feel it going only half way with the toe but with continued pressure it will go the rest of the way.
The other gears seam to pop right into gear.

My '03 DL1000 does this consistently going from 4th to 5th. I can feel it go half way in, then I toe up harder and it goes all the way into 5th. The other gears are OK. This really isn't a problem for me because it is consistent and I know that I have to do a harder toe up into 5th. The bike has been that way since new. I think it is characteristic of this transmission since others are experiencing it too.

Maybe I just have to get used to shifting on this bike. In my case, it doesn't hang between gears though. It stays in whatever gear it was in, either 4th or 5th.

I adjusted my shifter down slightly and it seemed to help. I felt the shifter was too high the way it came from the factory to get a good shift in the last 2 gears.

I had the same problem on my DL650 going from 2nd into 3rd. It was my technique. I needed to follow up with my my shift into 2nd. If I failed to do that I had a problem getting into 3rd. I understand that it's a different motor and gearbox from the 1000 but I think the principal is the same.

I've also had this problem as well. I had them lower the shifter level slightly on my first service, but it would still do it. I then bought a summer boot (which is slightly smaller) and noticed the problem all but dissappeared. The boot was smaller and it allowed the shift lever to return all the way down after an up-shift and it would work better. I noticed the problem increased when I went back to the bigger boots. I now try to roll my toe down as far as possible between shifts with the bigger boots, which helps some. The problem hasn't gone away 100%, but it is better so I'm guessing it's just the way the transmission is.

I've had a bit more experience on the bike now and the shifting has improved. After one week I've put on 2300 km., mainly highway miles, which means I've done lots of shifting into 5th and 6th where I was having the problem. It seems to be exactly for the reason you describe above. If I focus on letting the shift lever drop fully down after each shift by getting my boot out of the way more, then it makes the next shift cleanly. My motorcycle boot seems to be the culprit too. When I ride with my normal light hiking boots, which I'll do on short rides around town, I never have the problem.

I remember experiencing some difficulty shifting when I first got the bike, but got past that and didn't experience the problem again until I got a new pair a boots a few months ago. :idea:

I had switched to Daytona Voyagers and started to struggle to shift sometimes. Realised that it was the way the new boots fit under the gear level and the way my foot was sitting in the boot. Concentrated more on shifting for the next couple of trips, then forgot all about it again...but no more problems shifting.

Sorted.
