SF Bay Area (North) One Day Ride - Rt 36

I’m going to do a one day ride that includes Rt 36. It will be a long day but if you have ridden Rt 36 you know why I do it. If you haven’t ridden it yet you should.

Haven’t chosen the exact day but it will be a Monday Tuesday or Wednesday in the next couple of weeks. So this is a heads-up if anyone wants to join. While I’m a semi-organized guy - this is not an organized event.

It will be a long day:
Total Distance: 517.5 miles (832.8km) Total Estimated Time: 10 hrs., 2 mins. (AAA cage estimate)
Start: McDonald’s 3080 TRAVIS BLVD FAIRFIELD, CA 94533-3443
Depart: 6AM (drive through opens 5AM)

The general plan is to “slab” up to Red Bluff (so the sun won’t be in our eyes across Rt 36)
Fairfield, CA to Red Bluff, CA Distance: 142.7 miles (229.6km) Time: 2 hrs.7mins.
(Refuel in Red Bluff)

Ride Rt 36:

Red Bluff, CA, United States to Fortuna, CA Distance: 141.4 miles (227.6km) Time: 3 hrs.

There are a number of spur routes off Rt 36 and some people ride those and overnight in Fortuna for a two day ride. That can be an option for some...

Down the Coast:

Fortuna, CA, to Fort Bragg, CA Distance: 116.1 miles (186.8km) Time: 2 hrs.30mins.
Fort Bragg, CA, to Santa Rosa, CA Distance: 117.3 miles (188.8km) Time: 2 hrs.17mins.
Disperse around Santa Rosa as is best for your return home.

I used to live in Arcata and would hit 36 all the time. It's an incredible ride and if you have time you should definitely check it out.

Now I live in the Santa Cruz mountains and get my twisties fix every day. :)

I do love highway 36. wish it wasn't so far away. Used to live in San Jose and did enjoy the Santa Cruz mtns. Bear Creek rd, SR 236 through Big Basin etc. etc.

I live in Red Bluff so heading West on 36 is my go-to ride. Not only is it long, varied and curvy, there is little traffic. Let me know when you are going and maybe we could meet up in Red Bluff. I may not be able to get off of work, but I''m sure willing to give it a try.

I'll bring a doctor's note for you.

That's a pretty big day. 36 is 140 miles of pretty intense road. It will wear most riders out. The rest the roads will also require you to be in the game.
yeah for that I need to be fresh. I have spent the night in Fortuna and a couple times in Scotia at the Inn. I need to be fresh to enjoy it.

Agree, this is a very taxing stretch of road, I wouldn't want it in the middle of such a long day. I just drove it last week in my pickup truck, and even early on a weekday (when one would expect light traffic) there were a lot of vehicles in the narrow section over the top where there is no center line.

Also, be on the lookout for a couple of big, loose dogs on the just west of the top of that section. They were chasing all cars going past, and particularly went after a couple of Goldwing riders ahead of me.

I am interested. Have rode 36 eastbound but not westbound.

Would meet you in Dunnigan and break off before Ukiah, would work best for me. Let me know if/when you are going.

Good to hear. I'm definitely going and the only reason I've left the exact date open is an accommodation to anyone who is limited to a specific day of the week. I'll let this run a few more days and then firm up plans. We can swap cell #s privately (PM).
Dunnigan, as you know, is right on route and a good place to meet. And breaking off as you describe makes perfect sense. This is not a test. Just a really full day of motorcycle riding.

Oh No ... hopefully the county has another one on order. That sign is biker icon. How was the tar on 36? I haven't been across for almost two years.

It's all in pretty good shape. The pass (near Hwy 3) was just redone last year. Should be a great ride!

Mikeys: this is the place I mentioned to you - nice stopping point if you need to top off your stomach on the way home.

What I've done several times is to ride up to Ft Bragg after work - it's about 4 hours from the bay area. Spend the night there then I'm fresh for all the great roads the next day. Highway 36 is definitely awesome. If you're up there for more than one day, try out Sawyers Bar Rd. out of Etna. That's a road you'll remember ... especially when you get to the gorge! The 22 miles from Leggett to the coast is one of my favorite stretches too. Lot's of good stuff up there!!

NVDucati, what day are you thinking of? I might ride up to Red Bluff the night before and meet you someplace...

The date is set: August 2nd, Tuesday.
At this point there are 4 of us and everyone is joining at different points along the route. We will be communicating via text message / cell phone.
Insomuch as I am the only one starting at the most Southern point (Fairfield) unless someone contacts me via PM I will not worry about others until Dunnigan.
The details are unchanged from the original post.

Anyone else is still welcome to come along. As I said it will be a long day but I love that ride so it will be fun.
