Brief background: I currently ride an '88 K75 which I love and an '09 Bandit 1250 (which my wife wants:yesnod: She currently rides a Versys 650 and we're planning a Baja trip in Oct-Nov) Now to my questions:

I've read that the 1000 Vstroms are not as "desireable" as the 650s, not as smooth, etc....Is this true of the '14s as well, and what is the horsepower of the 14s? My Bandit is around 95 hp.

For those of you who travel on your 1000s, are they capable of "cruising" at 80 or above comfortably on the highway? (Even my K75 will do that)

Never having owned a Vstrom, I'd welcome any and all comments re: the '14 or even relative to earlier models compared/contrasted to the '14s.

I have over 1000 miles on my '14 Vee2. The sixth gear is a true overdrive/cruising gear. The bike rides "like butter" at 80mph indicated, in sixth gear at a little over 4k rpm. The h.p. I believe is just shy of 100, and more than enough power as far as I am concerned. The motor is 150% bigger than the 650, and much more power. I have almost no complaints, certainly no big complaints with this great bike. It certainly is one to consider. Good luck.

The 650 is more than capable of riding above 80 mph all day long when heavily loaded. That's been my expeirence.

There is no reason in the world a V-Strom 1000 would have issues with those speeds. It would have a decent amount of reserve power as well and likely not require much shifting either.

The new Vee2 looks like a wonderful package that has fixed up the little complaints people had about the original DL1000. Pretty much everything I have heard about it is that it is a terrific bike!

Back in the day.... The '02 to '13 DL1000 was little changed over the years, and it showed. I've had 1000 owners tell me that my 650 was the better bike. The '14 is all new except for the name, and even that is updated to DL1000A. Not saying that it's the right bike for you, but it does its job very well and puts a big smile on a lot of riders' faces.

The new V2 is a huge improvement over the previous model. I have owned both and after 1000 miles on the 14 it will be all the bike you are looking for. Especially if you like a 90° Vtwin.

The new 1000 is leaps and bounds ahead of any previous V-strom, 650 or 1000 :yesnod:

Maybe I can relate to you a little. I had a 2004 Bandit 1200 and a 2008 V-Strom 1000 and now I ride a 2014 DL 1000. I have also owed numerous 750 sized bikes including a Magna, a Maxim and several Viragos, not to mention Goldwings, ST1100, and a Concours 1000. I felt like the 2008 DL1000 was very road worthy, and I did several fairly long rides with it. I wouldn't have hesitated to take it on a 2,000 mile trip and would have been quite comfortable.

This new 2014 DL1000 is better in almost every way than the old one and will cruise at 80 MPH with little effort. It is smoother than my old DL1000 with better power in the most used RPM range. It is so smooth, if I didn't know better, I would never have guessed it is a V-Twin. Anyone who complains about the vibration on this new bike is extremely thin skinned and maybe should stick to driving cars.

I wouldn't even consider trading my new DL1000 for a Bandit, as it has way better ergonomics. That is one thing I will rate very high on V-Stroms, they have one of the best layouts for a comfortable ride of any of the bikes I have owned, exceeded only by my Goldwing 1800.

The only thing I don't care for with the new bike is the suitcase they have installed for a muffler. I liked the old twin tubes a lot better. Otherwise, I love the looks of the new bike. Hope this helps.
