Seeking Opinions: List Price '14 DL1000 ABS

2348 Views 15 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Charlie Anstadt
I've had my '14 1000 ABS for sale here in SoCal for a couple months at $6,900, negotiable.
Posted on Craigslist, Cycletrader, Facebook and here.
It's OEM except for 1 tooth down on the front, and Givi crash bars + skid plate.
20,100 mi on the ODO. Here's the ad on this site

I've had 6 general inquiries and 2 serious conversations, and that's it. Both of the serious went in different directions; 1 bought the Honda AT, the other a GSXR750.

Is it the season? My expectations too high? Is the list too high for what the bike is? Or is my own personal opinion about how fine this bike is as an ADV/tourer too lofty?

Honestly, there aren't a ton of these bikes listed in the SoCal area. I expected a bidding war and have heard crickets instead.

Trying to figure out if it's me, the season, the economy, the bike itself...

Thanks!

I bought a 2014 1000 Adventure for $ 7500 about 4 years ago. 25,000 miles on it. Had an Elka shock too ($1200).

Just sayin...

Looks like a great bike, but the economy had already softened the housing market and bet used cycle as well.

The motorcycle/used car market has peaked. Prices are high but getting "less high" all the time. Was at our state fair last week and one of the local vendors tells me on average all the shops are averaging about a 20% decrease in sales. Vendors feel is inflation and the fear of a recession that is causing money to flow less freely. People are getting worried about letting go of money for nonessential items.
And then there are the words my dear departed Daddy use to tell me: "Boy, its worth what someone will give you for it". (Econ 101)
I do hope you find the right buyer as we all know there is someone out there that wants that bike.....

End of summer, bad economy, sky high gas prices, coming recession and possible loss of job opportunities for what for many will be a toy, not commuter, selling bikes may not be easy right now.
FWIW, I bought my '14 DL1000 with OEM hard bags, OEM accessory bar and 6,000 miles on it three years ago for $6700.
You're in a good climate and area for the bike though, I've had to drop my asking price on a couple sales the last two years. Better for me to sell for less than hang on to it, it likely won't appreciate in value in my garage especially this time of year.

Since you asked…

A 9 YO bike, for ~ $7K?

Too high, I think. I wouldn’t pay that.

I know a guy who bought a “dealer demonstrator”, 2014 Vee, in about 2015, for either $7K, or $7.5K. I know dollars, now, aren’t worth what they were then, but, still…

$7K is too close to the best prices, I see, for new-model Wees, on Cycle Trader.

My view…

The spring is the best time to sell a bike. The warm up brings out the bikeless riders like roaches venturing out of a nest. Just like me. lol

edit
Here is one locally, I got my eye on it. I didn't know the 1000s were I4s. I thought they were triples.

Thanks all. Really good input, and IMO all of it confirming my hunches. I might be too attached to the bike, and thus too picky, right?
@dtysdalx21: Yes, low balls topped at $6k. I followed up, they didn't.
Looking forward to Spring, hope @Wee van Cleef is right
Meanwhile I'll just have to live with one too many bikes in the stable. Color me spoiled ... and loving it!

Good solution, if you don't need the $, nothing wrong with holding on to it.

Similar to my experience listing mine. Also a 2014 DL1000 ABS and fully loaded.

I need to sell mine to get the new Strom parallel twin as soon as it becomes available.

The cheaper it is, the faster it will sell...

Maybe.

Thinking of selling my bike as well. Has anything changed in your quest?

Nope, it's been bleak since I posted here in this thread. I mean, the only thing that's changed is my expectation. Like the consensus expressed in this thread, I could likely get a LOT of attention if I offered it for under $6k. I might do that ...this is not the only thing in the garage that begs farkling!

The other option is to wait until next Spring and try again at over $6k. I don't mean to be greedy, just think this bike is worth it. Admittedly I am biased ...
Thanks for the update. I am only hoping to get around 4K but wondering if that is reasonable. If not I will hold on to it.
