So, the standard buckboard seat is a failure beyond the first twenty minutes. Adding the Air Hawk gave me hours of riding which is fine but it does roll a bit and of course you sit higher.

A local upholsterer who also rides, modifies bike seats by cutting out some of the harder foam that they are made with and replacing with softer. He also cuts deeper in the center which relieves the tailbone and spreads the weight across the saddle. He charges $120 CA for the job - rider and passenger. My grandkid complained about his tailbone so for the extra 20 I figured OK . . .

And - as an added bonus, his work is invisible - no distortion of the shape of the seat - looks stock.

Ninety minutes without complaint and without additional support this weekend so I am calling it a success. It will encourage me to take more frequent breaks which is a good thing too.

I should have taken a picture of the piece he cut out but it had a squashed diamond shape with the deepest point of the diamond in the center and tapering out to the edges.

Highly recommended.

Me too

Took mine to an upholstery shop. Guy cut out a pocket of foam, put in a gel insert with a thin foam overlay. Put the original cover back on, so it's pretty much the stock appearance. Guy charged me around $100. Went from being a half-hour seat to a 2 hour seat. Definitely a good alternative to the expensive custom seats.
