fine steel wool works well. If it is on the friction area, just ride it, it will wear off the first time you apply the brake.

In the pad contact area or the support webbing?
If the former, steel wool is ok.
My bike is prone to the latter. Pulled 'em off and painted a spiffy coat of black. Comes from travelling where the salt sprays..

Spray a little brake cleaner on some fine steel wool, give a little scrubbing action, and you are good to go! :wink:
