I want to have the running lights connected to the ignition so they cut off automatically when the bike is powered off. I want to have it on a switch so I have the option of cutting them off completely or cutting on and off with the ignition. I think this can be done by getting the power from the tail light and running it through a switch. Will this work? If so, how do I identify the right wire and make the connection? If it won't work, or if you have a better idea, please let me know. Thanks for any help or suggestions.:mod2_helpsmilie:

You need to use a relay. One side of the relay contacts goes to the + side of the battery and through a fuse. The other load contact goes to your manual switch, then through the lights (you need to wire them in parallel) and back to the - battery terminal. One of the coil connections on the relay goes to a switched +12v source (tail light, head light, anything that is only on with the ignition) and the other coil connection goes to the - side of the battery. That way the lights will only come on when the ignition is on AND your manual switch is on. The tail light wire should be a solid brown wire in a bundle along the left side of the bike.

Right. The tail light wire cannot handle the load. http://www.easternbeaver.com/ is a good source for relays, fuse blocks, light switches and more. Jim Davis runs the place and has one of the few V-Stroms in Japan.

That'll work.Only thing I would do different is run the switched source for the coil through the manual switch instead of running the load through the relay contacts and manual switch both.I just like to use my switches in the control circuit instead of the power circuit.Plus that will keep the relay dropped out when you don't want the running lights on.
