Go here for everything you ever wanted to know about RTW travel. Bring a lunch, you could be there for days. Welcome! | Horizons Unlimited

Vstrom? Sure, why not? Honda Blackbird, yeah, it's been done.

If you're serious about doing it, order the 6 DVD series. It covers absolutely everything.

What the hey is RTW?

Already visit HL on a daily basis, just looking Vstrom tips.
I'm not quite finished outfitting my 2012, but I would have taken my '07 RTW if I was 30 years younger and in better health. The bike would have zero problems with it. What are you really asking?

I have the DVD's along with just about every other one I can find on the subject.

While at my Suzuki dealer I met a guy who essentially lives off an early 650 - a life long friend of the dealer principal. Anyway, he was eyeballing my '12 model and said - "Nice. Keep'er fluids fresh and she'll take you anywhere."

"Like yours?" Pointing to his weather-beaten ride. The thing had more dirt, dust, gear and stickers than any RTW traveler I've seen.

"Yeah. 3 years, 3 continents, 140K miles and counting" he said, followed by "I might need a clutch soon, but otherwise it's just been tires, sprockets and chains."

I am closing in on 130,000km's on my 2009 Vee, and yeah it's just that, tires sprockets and chains.....

There's a guy now going from somewhere in Europe (England?) to Australia on one - he posts on advrider. While it's not rtw, it's hella far. Don't remember his nick now, but it's something with strom.

While driving from Tbilisi to Yerevan this summer I saw one in the mountain roads of the region Ijevan. Don't know how far they were going, but with those roads they could go just about anywhere.

I'm planning my own RTW for some time in future(soon I hope,I turn 50 in a month)and I'm not sure if I should keep my 1000 or use my hack or buy a totally different bike .

what kind of roads do you want to ride? That should be enough to answer your question.

My real concern is reliabilty and parts availabilty.I have had elecrical issues in the past with the big V but they seem to be ok now.My hack is a 82 GS850 which is like a anvil,it just keeps going and going. So thats why I wanted to hear from people who done it on a strom.

Personally, I think a DL1K is nuts for this kind of trip, but reliability wouldn't be my reason, rather the extra hundred pounds and bigger engine and what both do for fuel mileage, tire life, and the like. Great bikes for high speed travel, but not what I'd want to take on dirt roads and a trip I'd prolly only get to make once. I'd be wanting to spend the money on something other than the extra gas and tires the big bike would take.

Austin Vince (Mondo Enduro) has gone round twice on a DR-350. Lois Pryce, his wife, has done Africa and both Americas on something much smaller than that.

The other extreme is the million dollar plus Long Way guys. I wouldn't want to do that either.

I've got 100k miles+, split between three DL650s. I'd take one anywhere (if I could) and just not worry about it. They're reliable as all get out, and if you've got a net connection, there are plenty of instances of folks logging in here from the boonies, and hollering for Greywolf to help them figure something out. And he does!

The size of the bike makes no difference to me,my V is geared to run 60mph and under all day long And I get around 12,000 miles our of my tires.Fuel ( mpg ) is not great, around 43 hwy.My big concern was reliabilty.

I was hoping to find people that had done a RTW trip or a looooong trip on a strom.I didn't want this to turn into a " which bike is better " battle. As far as which bike is better, just about any bike can OR has been ridden around the world.Hell I met a guy on a Honda Cub a few years back as he came thru Seattle on a RTW trip,he was having a ball !!.My intent was to find out what issues if any were found when taking a strom out for a really LONG ride !!.

Old riding aquaintance of mine Dean Tanji in 2010/2011 did a 18000+ mile ride from Tustin CA to Ushia Argentina on his 04 Vee 1000

Day05-Lunch Money!!, Fri, Dec 3, 2010 « The All-Star Motorcycle Circus & Expedition

That was after riding his DL1000 to Alaska the year before.

This year, 2012 he shipped it to Europe for a 2 month ride.
He is a hard core Iron Butt rider also...

Why do some 650 wee wee guys have such an affected Napolean complex ? 1000 Riders get as good a mileage as the 650's, maybe better since they don't have to work so hard to achieve speed and run lower RPM's at FWY speed. - It's the nut behind the HB's throttle that determines gas mileage among other variables.
*And additional 35 lbs is NOTHING to gain 40 more Horsepower.. Gimme a break, not FAUX logic.
