I've done searches to try to find the specific information on removing the tail light assembly in order to put the LED light in. And I'm not finding it on the site. I have the tail off the bike, the assembly is exposed, there's a bunch of wires and I cannot figure out how to remove the plastic tail light piece. The manual shows an exploded view, but I'm not getting it. Help, please. Thanks!

There are two more phillips head screws to that metal bracket. Remove those like you did the top one. That should free up the tail light assembly.

What confused me is, your photo is upside down. The two larger holes through the fairing are for the luggage rack, kind of on the bottom, and they should be on the top of the photo for orientation. It took me a minute to get it!!!

I have one of these (Brake! LED taillights) and I really like it. But it was a pain to install, as you're discovering.

Have you removed the bulb sockets from the taillight assembly? A half-twist each and they're out, with the bulbs still in them. Remove the bulbs; they won't fit anymore with the LED board in place. One of the sockets will power the new Brake! light, the other will remain empty, but you still need to re-install both of them to keep water out of the taillight assembly. (when you get to the re-assembly point)

See the two screws on each side of the taillight? They're near the rack holes in your picture, way up at the top (bottom of your picture). Try removing those two screws (don't lose the washers). They each go thru a rubber grommet that cushions the taillight assembly. The whole unit should be able to be pulled out at this point.

Then it's time to heat up the oven, but that's another adventure...

Make sure you pick a flashing pattern you like before you button everything back up. Happy flashing!

Sorry about the confusion. I have it flipped over and resting on the back of the bike. So are you talking about the two small screws that have the metal clamp thingies that flip over the wire? Got them out. But I'm turning the bulb sockets and they're not coming out.

They will. Grab hold of the "ridges" that protrude from the bulb socket, and twist them back and forth. Use some muscle on them. They will loosen up and you will be able to remove them. If I remember correctly, they are "keyed" into the light housing with little tabs. You will have to find the right amount of "turn" to remove them.

You can also disconnect the bulbs from the harness so that you can remove the whole assembly to deal with it on a workbench. Just unsnap the connections.

I'm ashamed to admit I resorted to vice grips to get the bulb sockets out. The oven is heating!

Do the turn signals have to come off, too?
It is quite possible. I am trying to recall this from memory...... (and by cheating because I am studying the schematic online)

I significantly changed the rear portion of my bike, and threw all of the parts away. But, looking at the schematic, and what I remember, the tail light assembly is fastened to the metal bracket by three screws. The bracket holds the light in place. The bracket is bolted to the bike. It is quite possible that the rear turn signals are the anchor points for the metal bracket. If this is true, I believe you will need a 17mm wrench to remove the nuts that hold the turn signals to the bike, (and anchor the metal bracket in place.).

There is nothing wrong with that! You are just being resourceful so that nothing burns in the oven!

Here you go! It took me a bit to find this photograph on my hard drives!

To answer your question, "YES" the turn signals do have to be removed to be able to get the metal bracket out.

Got the durn thing out. Heated it. And for the life of me, I cannot seem to break the glue. AAAAAGH.

Well, it took heating it and working it four times to get the two halves to separate. That is some serious glue that is put on those tail light assemblies. But the light is tested, it works, and it's reheating as I write. Soon, it will be back in its cradle. Thanks for the help!
