I installed the DFO on my '04 1000 about 3 weeks/200 miles ago. I did it mainly to try and cure the stumbling below 4k/rpm that the bike is famous for. I've lived with the problem since new; I had my dealer richen the low end about 5% early on, but it just got rid of the "hiccup" and not the uneveness. The stumbling didn't impact me TOO severely before the install as I would just keep the revs beyond the affected area; then I had to spend 2 months commuting in stop-n-go caca every morning. That's when the problem became a safety issue - the surging made smooth creeping impossible and unsettling.

Since the installation, the bike has been transformed. I'm enjoying it even more now that it cruises just as well at 3k/RPM as it always has at 5k-redline. I can now actually short-shift if the situation calls for it, and lope along w/o stumbling or worrying that the engine might cough and then snap if I'm 500 RPM too low and crack open the throttle. It's like owning a more mature and refined machine.

I went with the recommended settings and haven't deviated from them. I'm still running the stock exhaust and air filter, also. I was concerned about killing my mileage, but so far I've only seen a drop of about 2 mpg. I also haven't tried out the acceleration factor much, as this wasn't my major concern, but the few times I've needed to get away in a hurry the push seemed stronger and smoother than stock. I will explore this further as the urges arise.

I'm impressed with what this has done for my bike. Hope this helps someone else with the same dilemna!

Dfo

Installed the same thing only in Dobeck TFI label. Also an 04, DL1K . Other mods performed at the same time include leo-vince SBK exh. slipons, K&N air filter, dropped 1 tooth on counter sproket, and a TRE. No more stumbbling/stalling. Tachs out much much sooner. I now have a very usable 6th gear. Fuel use so far, best 40 mpg. over all milage is less due to the WOW factor, although my best , before mods was 42mpg. I too stayed as close to recommended settings as I could get it. With silencers installed it has good sound and not too loud. Main reason for mods was to cure the low Revs burp/stall, have a 6th gear I could use ,and accelleration, mission accomplished!

Please post your DFI POT settings!

Hi,

Can you please post your pot settings for your DFI? I recieved mine yesterday, the lean condition was worsened by my addition of the 2 brothers cans and K&N filter, I hope the DFI cures my stumble at 2.5K and 3.5K RPM. After that its a whoop to 9K. Thanks again

I will post the current pot settings In the AM. Strom is in unheated garage and the current temp is 19deg.F. I didn't record my settings So I'll have to go check . I do recall staying within the setting recommended in the instruction.
I also advise going down 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket.( DL1K ). Whenever I test the bike by lugging it in the low rev range it responds by more "grawl". It seems to protest by slight engine vibration. The smaller sprocket aids in acellerating through that range sooner and without stumble. (TFI is the same unit as DFI...AFAIK)

TFI pot setting

This is the pot setting for my 04 DL1K It is the TFI unit, tap on.
Grn.= arrow is a tick away from touching the 2 mark.
Yel.= arrow is about two ticks away from the 7 mark
Red.= arrow is about two ticks from the 2 mark.
RPM= arrow is dead on the 4 mark.
I have not dialed in on a dyno or used any other diagnostic equip. sniffer etc.
I followed the Electronic "jet kit" instructions for the 02-03 DL1000. I have an '04' , instructions didn't list it.
