What is the guideline for LED color when replacing bulbs? White or red within the brake/tail light enclosure? Brighter with white or washed out red with white? Is it just personal preference? Anyone have pics showing both?

After some research, what I have found is the rule of thumb is to match the LED color to the lens color if possible.

You must use a red LED for the tail light. The white LED has a very different spectrum that does not mach much of the red light housing spectrum. Means not much of the white LED light comes out and its not pure red either.

Incandescent light is rather similar to sunlight in that it has a complete and wide spectrum. LED's don't. They have a tight and rugged spectrum. See the cool white (5000-6000K type LED) has little red vs the incandescent that has a lot.

The red brake light lens filters out most wavelength's but let only the red pass, hence incandescent white bulbs work fine whereas cool white LED's have little light energy in the red wavelength:
