Red Kote Gas tank sealer

I'm sure this is probably covered somewhere on this site but I can't seem to find it. My gas tank is suffering from rust and causing it to not get the fuel it needs. I'm about to clean it out and seal it using Red Kote. I'm worried about the drain at the bottom of the tank where the hose connects to though. Is there any precautions I need to take when sealing the tank??

Clean/derust the tank and if it does not leak DO NOT coat it. If it does leak find good used tank and toss you tank in the recycle bin. To me lining a tank is a last-ditch effort if the tank leaks and you cannot find a suitable replacement. Lining a tank is a process that needs to be followed to tee. Even then it's likely you'll eff it up some portion of it and the liner will eventually bubble and peel and cause more trouble than just cleaning the rust.

Rust keeps clogging my fuel filter. There are no leaks and when I cleaned it out it just rusted again. Used tanks are quite pricey. So I decided to try the sealer. I've heard good things about Red Kote.
If rust keep clogging your filter you have not gotten all the rust out. After totally de-rusting and after toughly drying the tank the small amount of "flash rust" will not be enough to do anything.

Doesn't flash rust eventually turn into flaky rust? Without sealing it up it will just be a continuous cleaning. Especially since I live in a very humid environment.
Keep the tank topped up most of the time and it will not be a problem.
I’ve had good results with Por-70 on several OLD tanks.Cleaner,etcher,& sealer. Take every off the tank that you don’t want sealed.

I just replaced a tank the previous owner coated with....something. Not sure of the product, but sure of the result; peeling, tearing coating mixed with the rust that had gotten underneath and peeled more and more up. And while a rusty tank could have been cleaned, the shop I was working with had absolutely no idea how to remove the rust, peeling and still-adhered coating and get to a clean surface, so I got a used tank from a forum member and solved the problem for good.

Having seen what they can do a few years down the road, I can't imagine I'll ever use one of those....

It was probably not put in properly. To remove use methyl ethyl ketone or acetone. I feel pretty confident in doing it properly, I am an engineer I can figure stuff out, I was just wondering about possible openings I didn't know about, that others may be more familiar with. I think I figured it out. Gave it a liner (I really don't care about this bike much) and this will be the trial run. If it doesn't work I can always sell the bike to a scrap yard. 😉

🤣 Hahaha yeah. I plan on repainting it as well. That will be in the near future. I have 0 care for the aesthetics of this bike. I mean ZERO. As long as it rides good and clean I'm happy. Speaking of riding clean, anyone know where I could rent out a yosh box?? I'm in SE Oklahoma. Local Suzuki shop said no real fast.

Just looked at my supplies. Por 70 is what l have.Same company.Prolly same product,same box.

So far so good.. however I've discovered my high pressure is trash. Only squirts out 50 ml in three phases of injection. 🙄

The tank is still perfectly sealed today and shows no signs of deterioration. I followed the instructions to the T. That's important. The bike still has only 1500 kms on it! (not mine - my bikes pile up miles rapidly). I would recommend the product absolutely after seeing the results of this job.

Did the tank leak after you cleaned the rust prior to sealing it?
Why would he look for a leak.Cleaning the rust is part way thru the whole pretty much non- stop process.lt won’t fix rust perforation.

There are instances when the rust will block/mask a leak. Once the rust is removed the leak appears. Yes, it's a process and yes it will bridge small opening effectively blocking/sealing the tank from leaking.
