I 've searched a lot, I 've seen many videos and there are many different opinions. Some they say that as soon as you take the piston out of the cylinder, you brake their ''marriage'' and you have to replace the rings anyway, even if they are perfectly fine. Others say that if their spaces and gaps are in specifications and if you put everything back in its original place, everything will be good, and no oil will come through them. Finally what is the truth?

2 is correct. 1 is safer. It really depends on circumstances and why the pistons were removed in the first place. If it was low compression :), then really you need new rings, if it was just incidental then reusing is probably fine.

There was no compression issue there! Started with valve decabonizing and after i saw that the pistons and the upper part of the cylider was dirty and i took them out.

Can you re-install piston rings and not have problems? Yes, it has been done. But usually there is a very good reason for doing it. Such as being broke and cannot afford new ones, must get engine running right now and cannot wait for parts, etc.

If the ring gaps are within spec, that is good. But, you MUST be certain that you put the rings back in the groove they came out of. Especially important to not get any part of the oil scraper rings out of place.

It is very easy to get these parts mixed up. While rings do move on the piston, they often don't move very much. That position is where they are bedded in and moving them can ruin ring seal.

Rings are not expensive, you need a gasket set anyway, so order a set.

I'm with realshelby, emergency situation fine to throw the old rings back in and as soon as possible do it right. If it is apart in the garage it sounds ridiculous to put back the pistons with the old rings. Break the glaze on the cylinder walls and put in new rings. Change the oil after about 30 minutes of run time and know that you are good to go for a long time afterwards. Hell for that matter, mic the pistons and the bore and replace what needs to be done. If you just throw the old rings back on, please remind me not to buy your used strom in the future. Do it right. This reminds me why I don't like to purchase used motorcycles.

That was really CLEAR!!! This is my bike and i intend to keep it well running for years. (Would be impossible for me to sell to someone who lives in USA!!!) Thank you guys, your really supportive, more than in any other forum!
