Hi Guys,

Saturday evening I left work in Woodbridge. I had planned to ride to my friend Sylvain's place in Gatineau Quebec (across the river near Ottawa.) Sylvain is the one that introduced me to the V-Strom and has a 2002 DL1000 with 180,000 or so km on his bike.

When I left it was lightly raining and the weather forcast was largely for rain or scattered showers. I have Frogg Toggs rain gear so the ride was pretty nice for the most part. I stopped for food and gas in Peterborough and later for a coffee at Tim Horton's in Perth. The showers were pretty much gone by that point and I considered taking off my rain gear as the moon was popping through the clouds a lot of the time. I didn't take it off which was a good thing.

At Carlton Place I got hit by a heavy, heavy heavy squall line.. I swear the rain was going sideways! I was leaning what felt like 30 degrees into the wind while riding straight! In fact, I swear that on a gentle bend I was leaning the bike to the left while making a right turn.. I don't know if it was my imagination or what but that is what it felt like! The roads and traffic were such that I felt safer riding than stopping so that part was pretty hairy. Anyway, I got to Gatineau safe and dry with no problems there.

On the Sunday we went for a nice little ride.. Sylvain in his DL1000 and me in my DL650 plus he invited a friend along who had a KTM990. That sure is an incredible machine! Fast, wheelieing at 120 km/hr and blasting down gravel roads.. looks like a lot of fun! We did about 250 to 300 km in a great assortment of winding roads, some gravel stretches, and more winding roads. It was cold with the temperature varying from +2 to +4 celcius and a couple of times we were riding through light snow! Not enough to accumulate on the ground, but those large snow pellets/flakes that bounce off the bike and helmet and sit on top of grass but not pavement.

I left Monday morning and it was -3. The heated gear was real nice then! I went the route back that took me through Calabogie Road, Centennial Lake Road, and Matawatchen (sp?), (Great roads!) then hwy 28 to Bancroft, then down 507 and across to home in Mount Albert. I stopped and visited a friend on the way and it was +12 when I got home.

1400 km in a few days.. rain, squalls, snow, cold, warm, empty roads in total dark and in moonlight, winding roads, gravel, more winding roads... then I got to commute to work today as well.

Man I love my Strom!

You are probably right about beign the last long ride, but hope to keep riding as long as I can... maybe global warming is not such a bad thing for us in Canada...


When I had my 24,000 km inspection done at Newmarket Suzuki they seemed to think the chain was okay.. I have almsot 29,000 km on it and it seems to be the same as it was when I "stained" it so I am going to keep using it for now. I suspect that over the winter I'll get a new chain and sprockets as well as a new front tire to replace the original that is on it. What is the preferred front tire to go with a Tourance.. is it an Anakee?

Sounds like a good ride. Probably one of the last long ones for the year.

How is your chain holding out?

Nice ride.

Personally I prefer Tourance front and back. I put on a set of Anakees before my trip to The Rock in August and was never really happy with them. Replaced the rear with a Tourance when the old Anakee was ready to go, so now have a Tourance rear, anakee front. I haven't done much riding with this combo yet, but I like it better than Anakees front and back. I have previously run Tourance front and back and liked that combo, so when my front is worn, I'll be putting a Tourance back on.

Excuse the hi-jack, but...

You didn't happen to be with a KTM rider as your wingman, and were on Route 235 to Bonavista, around the middle of September, were you?

V-Stroms are surprisingly rare up here, on The Rock, and I can remember waving to a blue Strom and a big KTM, who were riding together on Route 235.

I have had the low speed steering wobble since a few thousand KM's and have heard several people suggest that the effect can be bad with the Tourance up front as well; the Anankee issupposed to be better.

Have you experienced it with either stock or replacement tires?

Nice ride.

Personally I prefer Tourance front and back. I put on a set of Anakees before my trip to The Rock in August and was never really happy with them. Replaced the rear with a Tourance when the old Anakee was ready to go, so now have a Tourance rear, anakee front. I haven't done much riding with this combo yet, but I like it better than Anakees front and back. I have previously run Tourance front and back and liked that combo, so when my front is worn, I'll be putting a Tourance back on.

I'm ready for new set of tires as well.
I'm going to wait until the spring to see if the price comes down due to the high dollar.

Both the Anakee and the Tourance are expensive.

Two plugs for Tourance

V-Tom,

I like my Tourance tires. I have ridden with both you and Newfoundlander, and I think the two of you ride excellently and with more skill than I have. The highways of coastal Newfoundland and Muskoka Ontario are pretty similar, ranging from beat-up macadam to silky smooth, sometimes without warning.

The only problem I had with the Tourance tire on front was a screw that the tire picked up on July 2, just west of Saint John's Newfoundland. That was not the tire's fault, and the tire nobly held its air until a cheerful Newfoundland native (with pitifully bad teeth despite his youth) hauled the screw out and inserted a plug. The plug lasted 2700 miles, or about 4000 kilometers, so again the Tourance front tire performed well when I needed it to. I have a new Tourance on the front, and I like it. I have put about 3000 miles on it since July 10, and it still looks almost new.

Hi Keith,

Did you ever experience the low-speed steering wobble that some (including myself) experience? This is a wobble that occurs at speeds around 30 to 60 kph (20 to 40 mph) when hands are off the bars (and might be perceptable when hands are rested very lightly on the bars.) It immediately is stopped when the hands are back on the bar in a normal way.

Others have experienced it and have said they have seen it become worse when the Tourance is installed on the front along with a back Tourance. It isn't a big deal in my case -more of an annoyance- and has been getting gradually worse as my original stock front tire has worn. many others that have experienced it said the problem generally disapperas with a new front tire. I have around 28,000 km on it and will be getting a replcement before too long. I would hate to make it worse with a front Tourance. Odds are I will go with an Anakee in the front but still am open to suggestions.

Nope sorry. I was on the Rock from Aug 8 - 22. I was with a couple other guys on Stroms for a day but mostly travelled just by myself.

I haven't had the wobble problem at all with the Tourance front. I only noticed it a little bit on decel hands free through around the 50km/h range on Anakees. As far as I can tell it is related to tread pattern and the steering geometry of the bike that at that particular speed range there is a slightly resonant vibration.

I think there used to be a problem with Tourance tires, but from my reading online that problem went away with the discontinued H rated version of the Tourance, and the only available version now is fine.

Not tire related, but....

3 November, still riding. Put on about 700km in the past week as it has actually been not too shabby weather-wise.

Tomorrow looks rideable as well, with a high of 5C, but after that they are calling for a chance of flurries for the next several days.

It wobbles a little ...

... when I ride no-hands, but I so seldom take my hands off the bars that I cannot call the wobble a problem. For example, I have new gloves that I can put on with one hand and my teeth ... and of course, teeth that I can put in with one hand, gloved or not.

In 46 years of riding, I have had a variety of peculiar machines. They have had a variety of previous owners, and some of them (owners and machines both) have been poorly maintained. I have never had a terrifying wobble, even while riding a machine after an upset that bent some major parts of the bike.

I think someone on this site mentioned a terrifying "tank-slapper" on a Strom, but I forget the outcome. If you search on the expression in quotes, you may find that message (and of course you will find this one too).

If a tire is the cause of a wobble, the tire itself must be badly out of balance. Perhaps there is an upper limit for the weights required to balance a wheel after installation of a new tire. I have never seen enormous nuggets of lead clinging to my rim and new tire, but it might be wise to make a fuss if the weights are too big. I am sure there are tire experts who can guide you.

For instance, if you can manage a ride to Kitchener, the folks at Zdeno may have advice (and a variety of tires) for you. This is a good place to go with an experienced rider who rides something you don't.

Hi Keith,

I purchased and had installed my Tourance rear at Zdenos. Great price and i thought great service.. he did it while I waited when I rode out from Woodbridge.

Don't mistake the wobble I am talking of for the "tank Slapper's" mentioned elsewhere.. those generally occur at high speeds and usually end in the rider being tossed from the bike. One member here tried combining high speeds with a set of side cases and had disastrous results.
What I am talking about is a very minor wobble that occurs when the hands are removed from or lightly resting on the bars and this occurs at fairly low speeds. It stops immediately when the hands are put back on or any force is applied. I have heard it relates to the combination of front and rear tires, with some front tires (even perfectly balanced) interacting with the rears to make this effect worse. I would rate it as a minor annoyance, but since I try to avoid annoyances I am trying to avoid this.

I had that same tiny wooble (weeble, weave?) when I had a Dunlop D607 on the front of my Wee. It started the instant the tire was installed, and went away the instant i replaced it with a Maxxis Detour.
I have had the original TW, a Tourance, A D607 and now the Maxxis on the front. The only tire that provided any problem was the Dunlop, regardless of what I had in the back.

Rode today

Not tire related, but....

3 November, still riding. Put on about 700km in the past week as it has actually been not too shabby weather-wise.

Had the P/U upon jackstands fixing the exhaust today and had to run to the hardware store twice. Used the 'Strom for gofer duty and got lots of odd looks from cagers. Mabey it was my full Carhart gear and old open face helmet. Me no care, me had fun.

I put on a set of Tourance this summer. The back was first followed by the front about 1K later. Right after the front was on I noticed the "wobble" at around 40 KPH. It goes away at higher or lower speeds. After 7,000 Km it has not become better or worse. It is not a serious wobble, just annoying

I parked the Strom a couple of weeks ago after freezing rain hit. Today it is snowing. *sigh*

I found my wobble got slightly better when I added the fork brace (it might have been my imagination) but it was still there. When I added the Tourance at 16,000 km it got slightly worse (with the stock front tire.) I still have the stock front tire with 29,000 km and the wobble is more pronounced.. it occurs at a wider range of speeds.

I drove my car to work yesterday which was a real good decision. I drove home (at 8pm) in a blinding snow squal for a bit! That ended quickly but the weather talked about snow in the morning:

I woke up to 4 inches of snow at home this morning..

Heavy lives in the snow belt.. he usually gets about double what I get.
