Some of my friends say it is because I'm just anal - but - after a broken head light lense and a hole in a BMW oil cooler I say an once of protection. So, I put a SW Motech belly pan, engine protection bars, and clear head light film on my new DL650k9abs. This leaves the radiator. While it is somewhat protected by the forks, fender and wheel I thought that something more was in order. And, being retired - why not make my own?

I have available a powerpoint drawing was used as a rough start. I used a cereal box initially to make sure of the measurements and location of the attachment points so that I would not scratch anything as I took it off and on the bike numerous times. Since there are slight "lips" between the outside of the radiator and the core I trimmed the template so that I would need to slightly flex it in order for it to fit inside these "lips". It is difficult to see in the pictures, but, there are two 5/8 inch tags on top of the screen that extend towards two "flanges" (above and behind the radiator) that each have a hole in them. These two tags are zip tied or wired to the respective holes in the flanges. Just because it was there I also placed a zip tie on the "brass" bent wire that is located top center of the radiator. Finally, the longer of the two tags on the bottom was bent around the bottom of the radiator, marked and then drilled for the 10mm bolt that goes into the back of the radiator and the shorter of the two is simply "tucked" behind the rubber flap.

My apologies to engineers and draftsmen out there for the drawing in that it is shown upside down (the two 5/8 inch tags should be on the top). PM me if you would like a copy of this drawing.

The material I used for the actual screen is reasonably heavy stainless that I found at a garage sale (free!). After final trimming I filed or (using a grinding wheel) ground off all rough edges.

Diesel - thanks! I took it out for a "test" ride yesterday and all appears to function as it should.
