radiator hose rubbing, some damage

1602 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Improperly Torqued
Found this today while doing routine maintenance on this '21 Wee (~9000 miles). There's some minor damage to the large radiator hose on the left side of the bike, a nick in the rubber from contact with the sharp edge nearby. Seems like a miss on Suzuki's part.

I've ordered some split loom tubing to protect it. Has anyone else seen this? Anyone know what the I.D. is of that hose (i.e., how much thickness do I have there)?

I found the same problem when I reseated the motor mounts on my 2014 Wee. I just used a piece of fuel hose and a zip tie on the engine V bracket to keep it from abraiding.

That's a good idea too.

Kinda annoying that it happened at all, since it's very easy to prevent and seems like a liability.

If I were replacing the coolant, I think just shortening the hose by a few mm would also do the job.

Good info, thank you.
I found a solution that works for me for now and is nearly invisible.

It turned out to be harder than I thought it would be to get a piece of split wire loom onto that hose. The stuff I like, which looks nicest, is the mesh variety (i.e. amazon.com/gp/product/B08NT43H29), but that doesn't work well here; the ends frayed badly while trying to wrestle it into place around all the obstructions.

So, protecting the bolt is much easier than protecting the hose. I used a smaller piece of plastic split loom tubing (3/8" I think). I cut it to couple of inches long, notched it so that completely wraps around the frame lug but neatly straddles the mounting tab on the ignition coil, and strapped it in place with a cable tie. It cannot rotate due to the notch, so should be fine for a long time. Here is what it looks like:

Pretty annoying design flaw, Mr. Suzuki! Shorten that host just a few mm on either end, and the problem goes away.
