Since the radiator & oil cooler are right behind the front tire, I was wondering about the possiblity of them being damaged from stones & stuff?

I have found a couple of radiator/cooler guards being offered for the Vstrom on the net. Just trying to decide if it would be worth the price to get some.

Something hit my radiator on my way home from the dealer. It put a HUGE dent in the radiator, but I think I was spared because it doesn't seem to be leaking anything. I attempted to order the SW_Motech radiator guard from Twistedthrottle, but it was on backorder and the really couldn't give me a solid ETA.

So I decided to make my own. Its not the best guard in the world, but it should protect the radiator better then nothing at all.

V-Strom Modifications and Performance

just a little curious here. concerning a fenda extenda, how much further down does it reach and would it be adequate protection for the oil cooler and filter under normal asphalt riding. i don^t plan on too much gravel. thanks in advance for any info and experiences posted.

finally done for the day. made my Staples rad protector. it should offer some added security from stones and the like. used the smallest regular in basket for paper. taking it apart without damage is the challenge. it looks like it won't block much air flow if any at all. something to monitor during hot weather. the wire mesh is just lite enough to cut with some good scissors(well they were good). i even had enough material left to cut a piece to fit behind the oil cooler screen, it fit well and looks good too. that plus a big ugly mud flap should do the trick. now to put the front fender back on and i can tackle the driving lites.
has anyone else tried the staples rad guard, i got the idea from a previous thread but i can't remember much about it.

Can ya send some pics. Im gonna rig up something like that (or use preforated steel, or.......) Whatever works. How did you attach said screen?
I have the Pat Walsh skid plate, havent really been out to much yet (still in hibernation) and I have the oil cooler grill. So my rad is the only exposed bit I need to take care of will the white stuff is still on the ground. Last year a stone kicked up and crunched some rad fins. $$ for a rad :(

posted a reply earlier but it didn't go through, must be a latent talent of mine. so here goes again and crossing my fingers. sorry but no pics. a digital camera is on my wish list. first measure your rad so you know how much area to cover. i found the smallest paper tray at staples to be large enough to do the job. it is a silver/ grey with a matal frame around each of the side pieces and bottom which is bent up to form the back. the frame work is spot welded at appropriate places. if you have a dremel your job is going to be very easy. i used a file and hack saw blade to cut the welds.
next, get some cable ties, eight will do, and washers. another eight will do. i used seal washer ( 4) for the back side of the rad to eliminate metal to metal contact but it may not be all that neccessary in the grand scheme of things. after taking apart the tray, measure how much needs to be cut off the back portion of the try. the finished rad guard will be a mesh that has re-inforced side and bottom edges. the extra side pieces or the cut off portion can be used for the oil cooler.
now the fun begins. flashlite required. look at the sides of the rad from top to bottom. there is a verticle line of slots that the cable ties can go through easily. thread them through from back to front so there are four ties sticking out the front of the rad. measure the distance between them and make appropriate holes in the wire mesh. the mesh when installed will not touch the cooling fins. the frame work is just big enough to go across and rest on the side tanks. i used some insulating tape on the frame work edge to avoid metal to metal contact again. just slide the mesh over the ties and put a washer on the tie. slide another tie onto that first tie. tighten as needed. trim your ties and have a beer.
as for the left over pieces of mesh, i used the cut off portion to put behind the factory mesh of the oil cooler. just cut it to size and the factory mesh will hold it in place. you might want to paint the mesh before hand, it is up to the individual, i didn't. the finished product should offer protection from most hazards without getting into great expense and weight. i see the mesh as sacrificial, same as a helmet. it can be replaced easily after an oops.
i hope i haven't been too long winded but i wanted to explain as well as could be. keep the shiny side up

Great description!

I am going to hit staples tomorrow. I have been to Home Depot, and Rona. I was looking for grill material to put in front of the rad. They had nothing usefull. I thought Crappy Tire may have had some but Staples is closer :)
Ill let you know how it goes. Should have her done by this weekend or next (I have a list of things to do on the bike before the snow melts)....

My other project after the rad guard is luggage. I want a top case and side cases. Pelican cases rigged up is my prefered method. (yeah I am a cheap bugger, but I figure the insurance companies need my $$ more than the after market)

Home depot solution for rad guard

I found at Home Depot a piece of screen material (among the rain gutter items) that has a solid frame. Bar code label has the numbers "SCV168" and "7 36223 14254 7" on it. It fits almost perfect (16"x8"), is just 6 mm too wide on each side. The metal screen is solid and costs about $2.69. I spray-painted it black and surrounded the frames edges with plastic fitting from car shop ($1 3 feet). Used some rubber grommets from Fry's to leave a little space between the screen and the radiator (8-10mm). total cost about $5.

Excellant solution to rad breakage. Sounds like a lot less work than my rad guard. Although the credit for my guard goes to some one else for discovering the parts etc and posting. Sounds good Dr. D. Ride on.

I bought one of these.

I won one one ebay and had them send me a black one. I straightened out the bend and removed one mounting tab. I bent the remaining one on one side slighly upwards and mounted the other two to the top of the radiator frame with dual-lock tape. It looks like it was made for the bike and fits perfectly. Pretty cheap solution for the quality. Expanded aluminum mesh with a black anodized aluminum frame!!! Oh and his reserve is $20 on the screens. :D

Tourtech radiator guard.

Looks great but wow :shock: over a hundred bucks! Anyone forked out the cash for one? Looks like it may be a bit restrictive on airflow. Just wondering.

I installed the radiator guard from twisted today,, went on easy adn still has the lazer cut dl 650 on it .. looks good and looks like it will prevent most damage and will allow alot of air thru....
