Hi,

I installed my Richland Rick peg lowering kit on the weekend, and unfortunately promptly un-installed it. My problem is that the change made to the gear shifting mechanism resulted in more difficult gear shifts that require more force, and finding neutral also became difficult.

I think this is because of the change in angle bewteen the gear shift arm (#25) and the gear shift rod(#27). The force is no longer being applied in an optimal fashion. The rod is no longer at a right angle to the arm. There is not enough thread on the rod to adjust it to a more suitable angle.

I am thinking my only solution would be to get a longer rod made somewhere, but thought I would check out the forum to see if I am the only person who has this problem? Do suzuki make a bike with the same kind of mechanism but with a longer rod ? Are there any work arounds?

I liked the kit but won't use it at the expense of easy gear shifts. I guess I just like my shift lever to be lower than everyone else...

Plenty of people have done the conversion with no problem. Make sure all the pivoting parts are properly lubed. If the angle was really a problem. a lot of folks would be bringing it up.

I had the same issue. Play around with it and you'll get the correct angle. Also grease the shift pivot. If you do a search you find a thread on this where greywolf attaches a schematic and tells you wich parts to lube.

Yeah, you have to fiddle with the shifter linkage to make it work right, but it will work as smoothly as it did before after you futz with it.

+1 for looking up Greywolf's posts about it.

When I installed mine I managed to put the shifter on improperly which left me in a situation where instead of 1st gear being down it was up so be sure you have the linkage geometry correct and the lever on the splines where it was when you started. Hope this helps.:thumbup:

We really don't mind getting calls to discuss installs and provide help. For anyone else who comes across this thread, the following is from the instructions provided for the footpeg and control lowering kit.... (embelished here).


1. Place a straight edge on the foot peg to see the existing position of the gear shift lever in relation to the foot-peg. (This ensure that the installer realizes that as supplied by Suzuki the gear shift is actually not level with the peg. It is approximetaly 3/4" lower than the peg. The amount the kit lowers the pegs [1" down and 3/16 forward] allows the gear shift linkage to be removed, repostioned, and still be 3/4" lower than the peg in the new position.}

2. Loosen and completely withdraw/remove the bolt (part #36) that holds the shift arm (#27) to the gear shift shaft (#18)

3. Remove the two bolts that hold the stock foot-peg and control plates to the frame.

4. Remove the foot-peg/control plates from the frame and slide the gear shift arm from the gear shift shaft.

5. Attach the adapter plate to the stock foot-peg and control plate with flush mount screws and ny-lock nuts.

6. Attach the adapter plate to the frame using the stock button socket head screws removed earlier. Again, blue Locktite 242 may be desriable.

7. Slide the gear shift arm over the gear shaft shaft in the position that results in the closest approximation of the stock position abserved in setp 1.

8. Re-install and tighten the shift arm retaining bolt (part #36).

I should probably make videos and post the to U-tube. I guess I better see if any of my kids or grandkids know how to do that. LOL

I thought I was the only one who had done this!!. Pretty embarrassing pulling out onto a 55 mph road and downshifting. Easy fix and all is well now! I LOVE the kit. Very high quality and MUCH better than the MCL kit for this bike. Highly recommend!

just go with the touratech lever and ditch the ridiculous stock linkage crap...much better shifting afterwards!:thumbup:

one way the mistake is made

One way the linkage mistake is easily made (started to do it myself) is to reconnect the shifter with "elbow" or pivot point to the left instead of the right (or toward the front wheel instead of the rear.) Just remember how it looked when you take it off.

I installed the gearshift lowering/relocation plate from Adventuretech.
I had to play around with the gear shift arm (#25) position and the length of the gear shift rod (#27) a bit to get a good right angle between them.
I had to use a ruler to help me with this since I couldn't eyeball this for some reason.
The gearshift works better now than before.

Rick was a great help in guiding me thru my difficulties. Answered all correspondence immediately.
