Question about Well Nuts - What holds the windshield on

I very recently purchased a 2015 650. I did not realize that a previous owner had removed the 5mm well nuts ( I hope thats what they are called ) that hold the screen on and replaced them with 8mm well nuts. One of them is stripped and I need to remove it and replace it. Two questions :
(1) Are they just pressed into place or is there some kind of backing on them. If pressed, I can try to pull it out. If not, I will need to disassemble the dash which I don't want to do.
(2) Where would I look for a replacement 8mm well nut?

As always thank you for your help. I do not have a shop manual and at this point do not want to purchase on...

A well nut is the same no matter what bike it’s on. Unscrew the screw from the well nut until only a thread or two are left engaged, then carefully pull the well nut out. It bulges on the end to hold it when the screw is tightened.

Be careful with the plastic parts.

Well nuts are readily available and used universally for different applications. They are used on the screen to isolate the faring blade from the vibrations of the faring.

Strange though - I could not find, nor have I ever used, an 8mm well nut.
Once you have loosened, but not completely removed the screw, you should be able to wiggle it out. The idea is that they expand as they tighten.

The O.D. of a well nut is supposed to be the same size as the whole it fits into.

(2) Where would I look for a replacement 8mm well nut?

The size of the well nut is based on the bolt that threads into it. What is the diameter of the bolts removed? A 5 mm well nut will have an OD about 9.5 mm in diameter, but it is still a 5 mm well nut.

If you removed a 5 mm bolt from the wind screen you probably have the correct well nut. Just pull it out after removing the bolt.

I find well nuts at hardware stores. The kind of stores that have the cabinets full of fasteners.

I bought cheap one that did not work as advertises. Could not reuse the fasteners when I changed to screen height.
