I did my TBS and now whenit is cold it idels real fast 2500-3000, also it won't go back to idle in 3rd gear sometimes. If I am cruising along in 3rd and want to decell it keeps on going at about 3000 rpm unless I hold the throttle hard against the stop. What did I do wrong?

My guess is the wrong screw was turned, but that should have showed when trying to balance.

Did they balance out well?

If they balanced out well, and you were turning the correct screw (rearmost lower screw on the DL650), then you only need to lower via your idle adjustment screw.

Otherwise sounds like you turned your throttle-stop screw instead.

Important note: Turning the throttle stop screw can show a difference in balance as you adjust it and fool you into thinking you are turning the balance screw.

Also double-check that you still have some freeplay at the throttle end.

I have a DL1000, I turned the right screws, it balanced out good and runs better except when trying to slow down in 3rd, and only in 3rd gear.

I'm about to do the TBS on my 650 (just installed the extension hoses last night).

I read that you must let the bike warm up to 3 bars and then adjust the idle to 1400 RPM - did you do that also?

3 bars for the 650, 2 for the 1000 unless idling a long time are normal readings.

3rd gear sticks only under light acceleration, not all the time, and if you shift it goes right back to idle, right?

Just out of curiosity, check for a current leak (disconnect negative battery cable with everything off and see if there is current between cable and terminal)

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be a shorted speedometer. I was running almost 12V with this test. After replacing the speedo cluster the problem went away.

Was yours happening only in 3rd gear?

Yep, just 3rd gear. When it "stuck" if I pulled in the clutch and shifted up or down it would go right back to normal idle. Rules out anything physically stuck, no question.

Also, only under light load, so CPU uses speed to make decisions, not air pressure, another hint that it was getting garbage from the speedo. (100% hindsight).
