I'm looking to get back into motorcycling after a bikeless stretch of about 17 years. Research, discussion, and consideration of my needs (commuting, short touring) have led me to a V-Strom 650 with ABS. Truth be told, I already have most of the farkles picked out! However, I will be waiting until next year to make a purchase.

What I'm curious about is the level of demand for V-Stroms in the Midwest. I've seen posts mention that availability is scarce in some regions of the country and plentiful in others.

I'm located in Fishers, IN and work on the east side of Indianapolis. While I'd prefer to buy from a dealer in the area, I realize that getting an ABS bike may be difficult so I'd be willing to travel up to probably 200 miles to get one. I'm willing to be patient and while I don't want to get hosed, rock-bottom pricing is not my primary concern.

Depending on the level of demand, are there any strategies I should pursue such as putting a deposit down at a dealer somewhere 3-6 months out? Or should I just forget about everything (as if that were possible) until I am absolutely ready to purchase? Based on things I've read, it seems like dealers may never really know if or when they have new V-Stroms coming in.

Also, if anyone is familiar with the central Indiana market, are there any recommended dealers or others to avoid?

There's a few guys from Indiana who are quite knowlegeable.

However, they're all in Alaska right now making me envious.

I bought my ABS bike from Honda East of Toledo, Ohio and trailered it home one January. Even from the Chicago area, it was a done in a single day. They are a no nonsense Internet dealer providing a good honest price with no haggling and no setup or freight charge nonsense. I paid $6799.50 plus Illinois taxes and title for a bike that normally went for a premium over it's $7199 MSRP. Since I do my own work, they were a perfect choice. I live in the Chicago area and I've never seen another ABS bike locally. The largest local dealer first quoted over $1000 for freight and setup charges on a non ABS model in addition to MSRP. There are good people here from the Indy area who probably have info on your local situation but do compare with what Honda of Toledo can do.

I just picked up my 650 ABS V-Strom last Saturday from Westfield Yamaha Suzuki. I checked pretty much all the local Indy area dealers and Westfield had the best price around here. Max Pitts at Peru also had the same price I paid, but, I wanted a flat black and they only had a yellow one with ABS. What I did find is that the ABS model is a bit harder to come by. Most dealers in Indy had one 650 V-Strom on the floor and they were not ABS equipped.

I paid $7200 plus about $450 for shipping/handling and setup. My bike was $350 cheaper than Dreyer quoted when all the charges were taken into account.

If you are going to get a top box don't make the mistake of getting the one that Suzuki offers - what a piece of cheap crap. Get a Givi or one of the other better made boxes.

I also have a 2005 Honda Goldwing and I bought this bike to pretty much ride to work (downtown Indy from Brownsburg). I don't have many miles on the V-Strom yet, but, I really like this bike for the light weight, performance, and handling. I had a 2004 Honda Shadow 1100 for my commuter bike and this V-Strom is just so much better for my needs. The Goldwing is still going to be my long distance bike though :D

I will believe that. I keep seeing Stroms headed North with a couple BMW's in tow. I would love to see the plates to find out exactly where they are from but that is not always possible.

I also bought my 08' from Honda East Toledo in Feb. I live 75 mi.north of Detroit.
It was well worth the drive as I found their price to be very good and they didn't treat you like a moron. I'd highly recommend them to anyone. My sales guy was Tad Summers who specializes in internet sales. :D

They are North of the border but that is probably not an option for a U.S. buyer.
The poster was from Indiana. I should have been more careful about the statement in an International forum though. Thanks.

I live on the southside in Frankin Township and I bought my 07 Vee at Dreyer Motorsports, it was the second bike I have bought there. Jeff Wheeler is the sales manager and is a former racer and all around good guy. I had them do a lot of work to my old cruiser and the techs are skilled. I would not hesitate to go back there. I have seen 650's at Flat Out on East Washington, but have been unimpressed with the sales staff's level of knowledge.

No problem Pat. If some one just South of the border really wanted one and were willing to pony up the added GWN price tag wee have them.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the info... it is much appreciated. It's hard to sit and wait, knowing that I won't be making a purchase for a while (mostly for "political" reasons if you know what I mean). I may just have to stop by the various dealerships in the coming months to see what they have to say, but I'm not at all opposed to going to Honda East in Toledo either if it makes sense (thanks for that tip!).

If anyone has more to add, I'm still all ears!
