I converted mine into a pure street bike by doing a 3/4 suspension lower, low windscreen, honda mirrors, scorpion exhaust, dunlop street tires, and lower fairing. I replaced the beak with standard front so my camera for my DVR, which is mounted right below the headlights, did not have it in the frame. I dont take it off road anymore and I could not justify buying a new street bike when the DL650 makes a nice one when setup for it.

welcome fitzee and which mini skid plate?
Thanks. I ordered a Ravetech. Won't be doing anything too crazy...pavement with some forest service roads and logging mainlines. I have a dual sport for getting into the more gnarly stuff. Looking at Aprilia mirrors and I transferred the Perfect Squeeze phone holder over from the Honda. Oh and one more farkle (there always is) is a crampbuster which a friend donated. Going to wait and see what I experience with buffeting/turbulence and if anything is required...seems to be an issue with others.

I presume you're getting the Ravetech mini because it fits without removing the oem front cowl. I too prefer to keep my stock cowl and so the mini or a weld86 (cowl would need minor changes) are 2 I'm looking at. If you would post back after getting the mini your impression of it that would be helpful.

Yes I kind of like the looks of the cowl and don't need a heavy duty off-road plate for the type of riding I'll be doing. Will post back after I get it installed.

If you ever get on a wet gravel road you'll see why the oem cowl is desirable. It catches most of the muddy spray and keeps it off your engine and other parts.

So I have the Ravetech Mini installed and as you requested here are my impressions...could be lengthy.
I ordered the mini for 2 reasons. #1 I actually like the look of the cowl and the fact, as you mentioned, that it keeps the muck off the engine is a bonus. #2 I won't be doing hairy off-road with this bike...some gravel, forest service roads etc. so a heavy-duty plate is overkill for my purposes.

I ordered the plate on Nov. 1 and had it delivered Nov. 6. 5 days from Thailand to British Columbia! Came well packaged and the quality of the pieces is excellent. Aluminum plate is heavy enough without being overkill. A nice finish on all parts and no rough edges etc. One thing that was terrible was the instruction sheet. A few fuzzy photos and no detail. So I decided to take some photos to maybe make it easier for someone else.

That looks very clean. So it's those 4 bolts and the plate drops away for oil changes?

And......I’m back!
I went and explored the touring rigs for awhile. Fun!
But got sucked back into the ADV thing. More fun!
I present to you my “new to me” 2016 Vstrom 1000. (8K Miles).

New to me '04 650.

Been cleaning it up after some major neglect from the previous owner. New tires, chain, sprockets, oil, brake pads, brake lines, spark plugs, air filter, windshield. crash bars... for now.

All that and a fresh wash for her sweet 16!
