Hi: has anyone used Pelican 1440? I would like a top loader but I think the 1430 may be to small for touring?

I have looked into them. Like the toploader design and I too think the 1430s may be too small. Every time I do the math on the exterior to interior volume, they look like a really ineffecient solution, and they aren't very lite either due to the wheels and the pull handle. Still have yet to see one in person though so this is all based off of specs from websites.

I also looked into Pelican cases, but thought the price and weight were a little steep for what you get. I purchased a Shad top trunk from www.murphskits.com and couldn't be happier. I got a 46 liter trunk with a brakelight kit for $262. This also includes a really nice, stout mounting plate. The other nice thing is that it detaches with the click of a button (so to speak) and locks. Something not accomplished as easily with a Pelican. Just food for thought.

Malldds,
How was the install of the Shad topcase? Did it require a lot of modifications to make it fit the Strom? The pricing sure makes it look attractive.

I just got it yesterday and haven't installed it. It looks to be fairly straightforward. I don't anticipate any problems at all. The only tricky part may be the wiring for the brake light kit, but the instructions don't look too difficult. I also saw instructions for routing the wiring in either this forum or the VSRI forum.
Call Murph and he'll give you the lowdown. He's a great guy to do business with. I ordered my trunk on a Friday and had it the next Tuesday. That's service.

Here's some more info on the cases:
