I recieved a Paypal charge from Verticalscope.Inc, for $20.00. I never heard of these people before so this got my attention! Called the Verticalscope # on the Paypal page, still didn't find out what they were or what the charge was for, so I opened a case with Paypal. I was finally able to talk with customer service rep at Paypal, was finally able to find out what this was. Auto renewal from Stromtrooper. Now, this was fine, I always support the site. But,my complaint is, there should be a notice emailed BEFORE this takes place, and, or, the name on the charge should be something the members recognize.
If a notice was sent I didn't see it, just wanted to save this hassle for anyone else by sending this, I know I get excited when someone is fooling around with my money, I imagine most people do!

Thanks for a great site.

If you want to cancel the automatic renewal you need to log in to your paypal account and click the "unsubscribe" to automatic renewals option.

I just did unsubscribe

I like this site, and I don't mind supporting things that are valuable to me, by contributing content that is hopefully part of the value of the site to others and with good old fashioned cash. I think that's a reasonable expectation - that one should try to contribute in some way.

However I asked for a small amount of help to restore a bit of broken functionality from the admins of this site, and although one of the volunteer moderators tried several times on my behalf to get them to fix it, we were both ignored by the folks at Vertical Scope that own this commercial site for about 2 weeks (so far). Hey, it's not the end of the world, but it's not acceptable either.

So I voted with my feet and unsubscribed. I'll still be a 'premium member' (for what little value that actually has) till December, but not thereafter.

The volunteers that moderate this site are incredible BTW. Props and thanks to them.

I get auto-renewal emails when any subscriptions are due to renew. That's the way it works. From running my own site that has a subscription service integrated with vBulletin, I do get some subscriptions where the person never checks the emails that are associated with their Paypal account. Pretty frustrating when I want to thank them, they never know it. So, be sure to check your Paypal email accounts.

PayPal double-billed????

I have been waiting a week with no response to my post regarding being billed twice ($40) and I am still getting emails from Verticalscope that my subscription is unpaid! Pretty shoddy forum operation!!!

It's an issue with how PayPal handles stuff. I always sent a check instead.

That may well be true (although none of the other subscriptions I have with PayPal ever double-billed me), but it does little to explain or excuse the lack of response from the VerticalScope team when there are problems like this.

They still have not replied to me, nor taken action. Unacceptable.

PayPal and Verticalscope

I didn't receive any notice that I was being charged a membership renewal from this site and was charge twice on January 18th, each time for $20. Seeing the charges totaling $40 on my Visa card statement and not knowing what the charges were for, I have registered a formal complaint through PayPal to investigate.
This website and forum is awesome and I will support it; but this is a very poor way of collecting dues. I suspect by the time I've sorted this mess out I will have wasted far more than $20 of my time and caused a fuss with PayPal and Verticalscope.

reply from VerticalScope

Andrea:
I didn't "manually" renew any membership on January 18.
I was charged twice January 18, each time for $20 to Verticalscope. No mention of why I was charged and no connection was evident to me as to what the charge was for. I've never formally been made aware of what membership of mine that VS is connected to. And now you inform me of that you have apparently cancelled my membership. Who are you to cancel any of my memberships?
Could you possibly explain what happened How and why is it that you charged me without notice or authorization? Will it happen again?

Hi ....,
We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused. All our memberships are auto renewed and when members manually renew their memberships it leads to a duplicate subscription and duplicate payment.

We have cancelled both subscriptions and have refunded the payments.

If you have any further questions or concerns let us know.

Hi ...,

I did not imply that you had manually renewed your membership of this year, I just stated that, that is usually the cause for a duplicate charge when a manual renewal takes place either a year ago, two years ago etc.

Your subscription has been cancelled, because this is the procedure when there is a paypal dispute initiated by a customer. If users request a refund for payments - they want the subscription cancelled. You still have access the account, the subscription has just been cancelled so that you DO NOT get charged in the future.

The reason you got charged is because there were two subscriptions signed up with the email address. The subscriptions were for a "$tromtrooper Premium Membership Subscription"
One of the subscriptions was created on Jan 18, 2011 and the other on Jan 18, 2012

So because the subscriptions are auto renewed, you got charged on Jan 18, 2013.

You will not get any further charges because it has been cancelled as stated previously.

Hope this answers your questions.

I gather a PayPal donation is a yearly subscription. If you want to donate every year, just do it once. If you don't want to donate any more, cancel the subscription in your PayPal account.
